Some of my impressions for the latest Star Wars
First of all, as everyone else has pointed out, yes, this one was much better than Eps. 1 or 2.
The fact of the matter is, as always, I really wanted it to work. For the most part, it did, but just as I was being engaged, drawn in to the story, at that critical moment I felt like George Lucas would step in and remind us of what he’s doing, and it’d fail to follow through.
Everything improved dramatically, from the script, to editing, writing, directing, and acting. The CG was vastly improved BUT there was a number of scenes, no matter how brief, that I intensely disliked and felt really failed the CG test. Generally they’re what I’d call “landscape” scenes where the camera does some sort of wide panning arc, but every time that happened, The CG-ness just popped out at me.
Those are my complaints, in a nutshell. Acting was much improved by palpatine, anakin, and especially obi-wan. Anakin was really good in fits and starts. Padme didn’t really have a chance, but I remember very strongly thinking that she wasn’t upset enough at the big dealy at the end. That annoyed me.
I enjoyed it, I’d definitely see it again, and it went a long way toward redeeming the franchise. Saying it didn’t go quite far enough isn’t too bad of a back-handed compliment. ;)
Oh yes! And the party was swank, with free drinks and popcorn that followed the banquet on the tables. Good herbed chicken and fish. Also, State reps look like you’d imagine them, apparently. *shakes head* Creepy. Ben and I had much fun, walking past all the peeps in line for the midnight showing at 10pm. Our conversation was carefully crafted so that we could say, over and over, “So, you’re saying Vader was his father?” “Yes, it was pretty surprising to see that Vader was his father.” According to Ben, one guy actually turned white, as his Spoiler AlertTM went off… and then he was just confused as he realized it wasn’t much of a spoiler. Heh. :) I also text messaged a litany of people to tell them that Padme is really a hermaphrodite. I had many amusing responses, none so much as Woody’s “Don’t you DARE ruin this movie for me! I am in line right now you sick bastard!”
Hee. :)
This makes for two friends of mine who somehow ended up going to legislature-related screenings.
Well, it was the Owner Party at Emagine, the movie started at 7:30 pm, but he had at least one state rep there. The rep had Reagan Hair.
Oh, heh. That makes sense… Still, it sounds like it was a good time.
While I was initially uninterested, the winds are pushing me to see it this weekend, or at least some time soon.

I got your text as I was playing Halo, so I had to go get my phone. I get back to my headset, and I started to tell everyone what you texted, and Jinx said, “ha! I just told them what atdt said!”
And then later, I got your text again. Weird!
*grins* I’m pleased to have entertained the H2 crew. ;)

How can anyone spoil this movie? We already know how it ends, just not precisely how we get there.
Did I miss anything?
Well, Mr. Clayfoot, the problem with spoilers is that many people don’t know the story as well as that, or have forgotten plot points from the previous movies. So, if you’ve paid attention to all the movies thus far, you can easily come to those conclusions, but if you haven’t, they will be surprises. And thus spoilers.
Help me out here, ’cause I only saw the second movie once, and it’s been years and years since I’ve seen the fourth one, though I did watch Clone Wars 1 & 2 once each. Which of these “spoilers” is not blatantly obvious to a casual fan?
Well, let me say the Padme issue is resolved in a way that is actually inconsistent with some remarks by Leia and Luke, though many loose ends are resolved, like C-3P0.
In that neither Grevious nor Dooku show up in the later movies, -something- has to happen to them, yes. Ultimately, of everything you said, the only thing that is not revealed to -everyone- is Palpatine. I have two friends who have specifically asked me if Palpatine is the emperor (well before this movie came out), and to each of them I told them to see the movie to find out. For a perceptive person who has really followed the movies, -of course- he is, but It’s not a gauranteed “known”.
Aha! But! The Padme issue is resolved if you take into account that neither of the twins were informed that they were adopted. Since Leia is speaking of the only mother that she’s ever known, she has to be speaking of Lady Organa.
Though, yes it is nice to finally understand why the hell R2 knows EVERYTHING while 3PO is wandering around Blonde and Blind.
And as a parting thought, if Obi-Wan is able to tell she’s pregnant ( I assume through the use of Force) why is he not able to tell that she’s carrying twins? And I like the way they made it look like she was still gravid during the funeral procession thus giving the impression that the ‘baby’ died as well. Just in case Darth happens to inquire.
I did like that, though I would have liked to see more subtle filming of that.
I presumed that Obi-Wan was able to tell due to unusual perception; perhaps guided by the force, but ultimately his own, due to her answers. I wish that there were more (subtle) clues as to when the force is being employed, mentally.
The part of the movie I most disliked was Yoda pushing his hair back. Ridiculously gratuitous.
I suppose you have a point about Lady Organa. :) I hadn’t thought of it that way.

The incessant beeping of my phone while I text-messaging you bugged the hell out of my boyfriend when he was trying to get to sleep at 11:30. I, however, found it most amusing. :)
Rock on :)

LAUGH! You’re evil, Xav.
It’s beautiful. :)
Thanks :) Last night I texted dan with the hermie comment, and he said “Don’t fuck with me, Xav.” That’s two Xav’s in 24 hours, it must be a sign.
