(using VLC Media player)

Man, I love open source software. I think to myself, “I wonder if anything else besides quicktime supports the new hi-def standard codec, and a little search comes up with this gem. plays just about everything ever (though it looks like it does wmv kinda wonky-like), audio and video, including an easy setup for streaming transmission.

That is all.

Current Open-source and/or GNU free license softwares on Athena:

VLC Media Player
FileZilla (compare: smartftp)
1st Page 2000 HTML editor (compare: Homesite)
OpenOffice (compare: MS Office)
Firefox (compare: Internet Explorer)
Gaim (compare: AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo Messenger)
Shareaza (compare: Kazaa, et al)
AVG Free Edition (compare: Norton Antivirus)

I’m quite happy with all of these, and would recommend each of them. The best is the free version of AVG, which does daily updates and doesn’t bug me about subscribing.

  1. I don’t think AVG is technically open source.. still free, and way better than McAfee or Norton as far as system resources and such things go. If ever I had to use Windows, I would definitely use that for A/V. The rest of that software, though. Yeah. OSS rules. VLC has been making leaps and bounds in progress. Only a few versions back it was pretty crappy. But now it’s one of the first things I’ll grab when doing an install. Good shite.
