Work thoughts

This past week or two has been a perfect example of why it can pay to be
straightforward with people, even your boss.

Last week, we had a sort of State of the Web Group discussion where he
asked me how long I planned on sticking around (knowing I’m more
interested in video), etc etc. I told him a number of things, including
that I was aware I should have negotiated more when we set up my initial
salary, and that I hadn’t started looking yet for another position, and
that the copy-paste of the daily grind is boring as hell.
Lack of interest = oversight of minor details.

Anyway, since then, I’ve had a number of projects come up that have
been quite interesting, comparatively speaking. They had me create a
“microsite” off the main for a major advertiser, based on a pdf and
source photos. I created a second, simpler ad page as well. Now,
they’re buying flash for me to experiment with because we need to ‘make
good’ with a different advertiser, and we’re going to have some basic
motion on some sort of interstitial ad.

So I have every excuse to screw around with Flash animating instead of
copy-paste copy-paste. Flash has many similarities to various video
editing programs, what with the keyframing and all, so this should be
interesting.

Meanwhile, I’m talking about trying to get a new vehicle, and
consolidating my student loans (for which I still have until October to
pay) and my Chase card (which I haven’t used in at least five years, and
haven’t made a dent in). I should be looking.

  1. Welcome to the Stagnation! ermmm….did I fail to mention that way back when? ;) Same reason I’m doing the self-directed educational plan for UNIX/Network Security. They sure as hell aren’t going to help me grow in my career!

I’m glad they got Flash for you at least. :D

And fuck those fucking fire fuck alarms. FUCK!

    • Hey, don’t forget about the POWER OUTTAGE. Yeah, it was only for half a second, but that was just enough time for every.computer.to.shut.down.

  2. Glad to hear this…

As you might realize, being in HR we want to know the things you said to your boss. The reason being, and this is a philosophy that is taking hold in corporate America, it is important to have the right people on the bus. It is less important to have them do what you hired them for and more important to have them in the right position to make the company money. By shedding light on what you wanted, you help yourself to make a difference in rounding out your career. Where you might not make the money you wanted you will now be compensated by gaining experience that might come in handy. I’m glad you were honest and that that worked out for you. Good Going!

  3. great work on getting the man to get you what you need to get the hell out of daily grind. you can never stop learning. be the sponge.
