Favorite smells (asked by chimalis)

I like the smell of pine trees, especially a certain dark pine that immediately recalls preschool for me; a time of confinement, more or less.

I love the smell of my mom’s pasta. Of all the lovely meals and lovely food smells, it makes me ravenous. I bought bay leaves last night in the hopes of recreating it soon. There are lots of other lovely food smells, like cookies and fresh bread, but everyone loves those, don’t they?

Speaking of which, though it isn’t in her pasta sauce, I love the smell of rosemary. I discovered it at quiznos, and now I use it frequently. I used to think it was sweet, because it was usually with sweet things, but it is not.

I love the smell of a fresh pack of Magic Cards. Admittedly, I haven’t bought any in many years, but cracking open that package and taking a deep whiff… intoxicating. :)

I love the smell of old books. I have a number of very old books at home, and any time I dare crack them open, I’m back to my 4th grade school library.

I enjoy the smell of new plastic. It’s not even a great smell, but I like it anyway.

I love the smell of a motorboat/snowmobile engine. Reasons should be obvious.

Ultimately, though, I think my favorite smell is that of a healthy lake. Worms, fish and all, the clean smell on a cool breeze brings up nearly every happy memory I ever had at my grandmother’s place in Portage, MI (before she moved to FL and then PA). That’s a huge part of why I’d love to live in a city and very close to a nice lake. Is there such a thing, or do cities destroy lakes? *sigh*

What do you like to smell?

  1. I love the smell of old books
Ditto plus petrol, freshly brewed coffee, lemon basil, fresh cinnamon pastries, fresh tobacco…

    • Only one of those I really dislike is tobacco. Perhaps it’s because of the close living quarters I had as a kid with my mom, who was a fairly heavy smoker, but raw tobacco makes me want to hurl :)

I’ve come to like some coffee smells, depending on the situation and my mood. I’d still rather drink a hot chocolate or tea :)

  2. I will concur with you on the book smell. I am actually going to a used bookstore this weekend that smells fantastic, not too musty which is often the case with those places.

I also love the smell of coffee, it has been my best friend since 6th grade. Cloves also smell pretty damn good, smokey yet sweet. My favorite smell is bonfire smoke. If they made a perfume that smelled like that, I would own it.

    • Ah yes, the bonfire! I forgot about that favorite :)

What store? When ya going? I MISS YA!

      • It’s a little store in a small town on my way up to the cottage in Tobermory. Come to think of it, I think that store is the only building in the town. I’m going up for a family trip til Tuesday but we are planning to go again in August. YOU SHOULD COME!! We’re (Elyse, Alea, Erin) going sometime around August 18-22. The 22nd is Alea’s birthday so we’re kinda celebrating that and she’s never been up there so it’s damn time she makes the trip. Same goes for you my friend. Really. Come. I MISS YOU TOOOOOOO!!!!!

    • You need to rediscover AIM :)

  3. There are cities near lakes. Check out Charlotte, NC.

My brother loves the smell of a new pack of Magic Cards, and I’ll admit to having sniffed a few packs.

I love the smell of books, pasta sauce (my own, with rosemary), my kittens fur after she’s just cleaned, the way certain men smell just after thier shower and the soap smell’s worn off, scented massage oils, and….

my dirty seceret favorite smell? Clean hospitals. They make me feel safe.

  4. I’ll cop to the typical guy things; coffee, new car smell (probably included in the plastic category), new leather goods. Throw in jet exhaust; it just smells exciting, probably conditioning after all those air shows.

Old books. Old books rock. I wonder if they make an air freshener in that scent?

Vanilla. Maybe lemon, but it needs to be subtle. Cedar, pine, and mahogany, especially freshly-cut.

Fresh air, right before or after a storm.

And (tummy rumble) most forms of food.

    — Steve’s going to duck out for a coffee break now. Dratted appetite.

  5. Hmm, new mown grass or hay, a clean kitty (or even a chicken – parents raise them and clean feathers smell nice), my husband’s hair, ripe peaches (I can almost taste the juice), and my mom’s cooking (dad’s too).

  6. Victoria’s Secret pear lotion … mmmmmmmmm.

Then this perfume that some girl in my highschool used. I never figured out who it was, but I always looked forward to the break between 3rd and 4th period when I would walk down the same hall she did (or had recently or something) …. I tried to figure out who it was (though I’m not sure I would have had the guts to ask her about it anyway), but in a school of 3K students, the halls get pretty packed with people in between classes.

  7. i keep thinking of new things

    – lavender as it grows in my garden
    – roses
    – gardenia
    – my dad
    – oil of olay immediately inspires me to think of my grandmas
    – certain brands of lipsticks
    – hair dye

  8. vanilla, food at grandma’s, fresh coffee brewing, frankincense, my mom’s perfume, rain on a warm day, campfires. ahhh
