I read Neverwhere, finally, and almost entirely at work, and have two things to say about it.
I’ve read a number of stories about fae folk, enough to see the connection he was making… but he never made it. Perhaps it was just from that bit of knowledge that I felt like there was a vital fact missing from the first part of the book, but I really wanted more information about London Below. I can appreciate that we’re being hauled along just as much as Arthur– I mean Richard– was, but even so, I wanted a little more of a clue as to what we were seeing. The idea that London Below exists because of people who fell through the cracks isn’t -enough- to explain the angels and giant boars and such. I don’t need it -all-, but … more.
Also, reading an adventure book at work when you should be working is one way to give your life that lovely tint of dissatisfaction. Perhaps it’s reading so many adventure stories as a kid that makes me do all the things I do, all at once. *shrugs*
In non-adventure news, I may be doing some video work for my boss at Crain. This is an unusual turn of events. That said, I still have my eyes open, especially for something in Ann Arbor, so if any of you fine feathered friends have a tip on something web, computer, video, or graphics related in A2 please let me know. The only way anyone gets a job these days is with a reference, no matter how vague.
Also Also wik, It’s a very very very unusual evening when I go to bed at 8:30 and get up at 6:30.
I felt the same way about Neverwhere. I wanted a bit more. Subsequent readings have dampened that dissatisfaction. But I still think he could have done more with it. Still, as a first novel, it’s not bad.
I’ve been wanting to read it, along with American Gods, but haven’t had the chance yet. Thanks for posting your thoughts on the book–its definitely on my radar these days.
Have you ever seen the BBC version?
I didn’t know the BBC did Neverwhere.
