Music I’d like to listen to (soon):
Chris Whitley
Fountains of Wayne
Leonard Cohen
Poe (does she have a new album? Who has my copy of her last album?)
Fiona Apple (latest)
Gomez
If you can think of someone else who is lyrically suave, I’m looking to update my now-overlistened music collection.
I LOVE Fountains of Wayne!
Other suggestions:
Bowling For Soup (freakin’ hilarious)
Tracy Grammer (if you like good lyrics and don’t mind folk)
Robert Plant’s new album is fantastic
That’s all.
Can’t go wrong with Leonard Cohen. Especially “Various Positions.”

Recommendations for the moment:
Neko Case
Death Cab For Cutie
Mike Doughty
Poe only has 2 albums, and nobody’s heard of the first one.

Actually, one of my favorite “obscure songs” when I was younger was “Angry Johnny.” My buddy picked up that album because he’d like to use “Fly Away” for the ending credits of his movie. Both are from the first album.
I find the second album to be a total work of art, especially listened to in sequence. It’s very much like a book, in that it takes you through various related experiences in order to understand the whole, and when you finish the album, you feel like a story has been completed.
When I had the second CD, I listened to it all the time. I think I let someone borrow it, and it’s gone now, alas.
Actually, I beg to differ.
The first one is the ONLY one I’ve heard of.
I need to get me a copy of it too.
Really? Poe had a minor modern rock hit off of Haunted with Hey, Pretty, and that’s when I first (and last) heard of her.
Actually, I heard “Wild” before I heard “Hey, Pretty”, and “Control” and “Not a Virgin” have also been played, once, that I heard. I don’t know which were singles and which weren’t, and it was probably public radio or “Big Sonic Heaven” that was playing it.
Hrm… all I know is that you can’t talk to a psycho like a normal human being.
*snort*
Yes I can, it’s just not very…productive.
Ultimately, I end up just wanting to kill him. I want to blow him… away.
Yeah. Some of my friends got “Hello” back in the day. They were always more progressive with music than I was.
Anyway, I always like the album, but never bothered to get my hands on it. I thought it was the only one she ever did. Which would have been a shame, as it was really quite a good album, with some interesting themes in it, especially for the time.
I think she was the first one (that I remember, at least) to do a song about the ‘net (Hello), which I always thought was cool.
You really do want to pick up her second album, if you like her. As I mentioned in a different comment, it really is an advanced work of art.
I think I’m going to have to go about tracking down both albums now.
Hrm.
I heard of the first album and bought it when it came out… the first song I heard of hers was, in fact, “Hello”, and I’m pretty sure this was her first single that they played on 92.1 way back in the day. I think her second album is better, but they’re both good. She’s having some kind of contract issue with her record label that are keeping her from a third album.
I never thought of her as obscure tho. I always thought this was one of my more mainstream tastes.
I recommend The Von Bondies right now. I’m getting addicted to the Pawn Shoppe Heart album.
The Refreshments first album “Fizzy Fuzzy Big and Buzzy” is a lyrical mindfield-witty, sarcastic, and fun. Lyrically it’s Roger’s best work.
I too am a HUGE Bowling For Soup fan, some of the best rock music in the last ten years. Silly genius.
Better Than Ezra is still worth checking out, their latest album is great. Highly recommended.
If you like lyrics, you can’t go wrong with Dar Williams. Her first album “The Honesty Room” is a story-teller’s paradise. Her last two albums “Beauty of the Rain and “The Green World” find her in more of a folk-pop world, but the lyrics still sparkle ocassionaly.
I may be a jackass, but I know music. Next time you are in town I can burn you a “Dar Sampler” if you remind me.
I haven’t heard anything by Poe since “Hey pretty”..
+1 for Bowling for Soup.
Might I also suggest new stuff from The Thrills.
i absolutely adore poe. i have both her albums and love both of them equally (hey pretty, from the second album is, imho, one of scott’s theme songs ;)
leonard cohen is great too, tho i have to admit the only album i know from him is “the future”. for many years i fell asleep to this album.
(sorry, no musical suggestions at this juncture :)
Mmmmm….. Jewel Staite……
*wipes up some drool*
Sorry, were you expecting a real comment here?
Yeah, you can’t have an icon like that and expect people not to… not… to, um…
What were we talking about?
We were talking?
I’m nto necessarily sure about “lyrically suave”, but I’ll throw out Marc Cohn as an excellent artist to look into. He has three albums out, although the first one is probably the best. It actually won a grammy back in the mid-90’s for “best new artist”. His second and third albums are good, but… different. More folksy, I guess.
Still, one of my favorites, by a long shot.
Ummm… The Killers be good, if you haven’t already gotted “Hot Fuss”. If you haven’t, I HIGHLY HIGHLY suggest it. The worst song on the album is better than 90% of the shit out there today.
Yeah… not really sure who else qualifies as “lyrically suave”. I’m sure I have more on my iPod, but I can’t think of them at the moment. Plus most of my iPod is oldies anyway.
Mid 1990’s? His first album came out in 1991. He did win a Grammy for best new artist the following year, which assured him of falling off the Earth. I saw him live a few years ago, good performer.
You heard about him getting shot in the head right? Happened a few days ago, though he escaped with only minor injuries. I’m still not sure how you can be shot in the head and only have minor injuries.
1992, mid-90’s, it’s all the same to me. I was like 10 then.
And no, I didn’t hear about him getting shot, but thanks for letting me know. Huh.
I think the bullet got lodged in his skull, thus doing no damage to the brain, but I could be wrong.
I just hope he can still sing. Evidentily he’s touring with Suzanne Vega, and that’d make for an interesting concert… *goes off to check ticketwhore.com*
Ahh, the “blood makes noise” girl.
I have that song on a mix CD somewhere. I remember a long drive up north, when the people with me were singing “my butt makes noise, it’s a-ringin’ in my ears”.
Highly offensive. I laughed my ass off.
So to speak.
Powderfinger. Something For Kate. Both Aussie bands — Vulture Street is a great, great album.
“White African” by Otis Taylor if you want deeply-felt emo. (My Soul’s In Louisiana is sublime.)
Better Than Ezra is definitely a good suggestion, I second that motion.
I have also been listening to a lot of Fiest, it’s a good cuddle up and spend the afternoon in bed record, it’s called Let It Die.
I also know you have a thing for Celtic music, you should really check out The Dhuks. They blend bluegrass, gospel, celtic, folk, and a little bit of –gasp–country into terribly catchy toe tapping tunes.
