Health “TMI”

Obviously, I don’t particularly believe in TMI, or I wouldn’t post it.

I was a bit worried today, as I had black stool, which is a completely new experience. This can be caused by bleeding higher up in the digestive system or (as I could suspect) perhaps if I were swallowing blood I would otherwise be coughing up?

However, I took a look with WebMD, and they say

Some foods and medicines can also change the look of the stool. If you take bismuth subsalicylate, such as Pepto-Bismol, or iron tablets, your stool may look black, and if you eat lots of beets, your stool may turn red.

Since I took extra-strength pepto to counteract the stomach turmoil from the antihistamines, I’m not so concerned anymore. If it continues into the next time, that’s when I’ll allow myself to be concerned.

  1. I get black stools every time I take pink bismuth. Also if I eat more than two meals in a row with too many rich leafy greens (like spinach). Unless you’re having some other symptoms consistent with peptic ulcers or intestinal bleeding, I really wouldn’t worry about it. Its the most common side effect of pink bismuth, I think.

  2. Too many carrots can make it turn orange, too.
Blue curacao can make it turn a very interesting green.
Chewing through a glowstick and eating the glass and juice inside while quite altered during an Orb concert can make it vaugely glow.

I’ve had some very disconcerting things come out of that particular orifice.

  3. And if you eat the Kroger brand fruity pebbles, it’ll turn bright green. :P
