The best Digital Camera is one that doesn’t look like a Digital Camera.
Yes, I know it isn’t the cutting edge of digital cameras, with 5 megapixels. Yes, I know it only comes with 64 megs (upgradeable, natch). Still, I covet it with the furious heat of a thousand suns.
EDIT: What, no one noticed that I typo’d “Digilix-2”? I expected better freudian eagle eyes from you folk. *tsk*
i’ll pass.
My husband got one of those big bulky digital cameras that look like a plain old 35mm.
I hate it.
I want one of those wallet sized one so I can actually carry it with me and take pictures without having to lug a case for it.
I do a lot of tripod work, and small cameras aren’t very good for that. I have a “vacation camera”, which is reasonably small (still sort of bulky, but smaller than most film cameras), and that works fine for those sorts of things, but if I’m going to be taking photos for art or professional purposes, I want a camera where I can choose a narrow focus with a high quality lens that I can change when necessary. That means a bulky old-school camera. *s*
I’ll have to show you my grandfathers Leica from his time in the Army in Austria around WWII. Medium format. GORGEOUS beast. :)
oooooh! that’s nice!
Does Adray’s carry them? I’d love to go a-coveting with you to see one. Kinda sounds like a fun holiday sort of thing to do.
True, I haven’t checked, but I bet they do. :)
Looks like a good camera. 5MP is nothing to scoff at, but not rare either. What makes you covet this camera so?
Great lens, classic style, a metal finish, and made to be durable. Leica’s a great name in cameras. I have to admit, though, that the functionality is just made that much cooler by the form, here.
Hey! I just remembered, are you still going to give up that old PDA you had? Strangely enough, no one has jumped up to thrust their old tech at me yet, so I’m still on the hunt for something that meets my wide and cheap sensibilities. :D
Want one fast or good?
I’m surprised you don’t already have one in your hands!
Do you want one fast or good? I’m still verifying that I didn’t lose anything important upgrading from the Visor to the LifeDrive. For example, I know for a fact that an old password program (with lots of important passwords!) was rejected by the LifeDrive upgrade routine. However, I also have an old Palm IIIx that’s just languishing in a box; it could go out anytime. The Handspring Visor Deluxe has 8MB, the Palm IIIx only 2MB. Want to get the Palm IIIx now, or wait awhile for the Visor with more memory?
Re: Want one fast or good?
My paper planner still has some time left in it, so I’m not in a major hurry, so I suppose I’ll wait for the Visor. :)
Thanks a bunch, Mr. Foot! :D
I hvae a friend who loves Leica… Im a Canon guy myself though :P
plus, don’t consider something ‘not cutting edge’ just by the megapixel… there are loads of cameras out there with high MP’s, but the image quality is crap, and images need to be shrunk to appear to approach the quality of better cameras with lower MP’s… most cameras these days are staying away from the >8 MP ranges, just because their ccd’s aren’t matching it with quality…
Canon even has an 11MP pro camera, but it’s 3 years old… they stayed away from that size since then and focused their pro SLRs on the quality rather than the size… now they just released another slr, the 5D with a 12MP size… really unless you’re doing professional advertising on poster size billboards, or a very dedicated artistic photographer, anything over 8MP is just extraneous…
So, if Leica’s quality is there with the 5MP, it’s more than capable of holding its own against the big boys…
fyi, I frequent DPReview.com for all the latest in digital cameras… their samples gallery is extremely useful.
oh and BTW – it’s Digilux, not Digilix ;) hehe just a funny typo
*grins* Ah! I guess someone did notice. :) I, on the other hand, did not, and LJ’s ultra-inconvenient dropping of messages had me missing this one :)
PS as for your other comment – I do create movie posters and larger-than-8x-10 pro photos, so I would use those MP’s. ;)
ahh, good on ye then :)
there is a Leica D-LUX 2 that’s 8.3MP and better zoom… have you checked that out?
I can’t afford any of them. :) However, I like the other because, along with the incredible lens, it has a classic look I enjoy. This one is a different sort of classic.
true… the D-LUX 2 has a more ‘modern classic’ look ;)
OooooOOOOOoooooh. Leica lenses… niiiiice. Forget all the other gimmicks; give me a good lens and a good CCD and I’m happy with a digital camera. (Oh, and an EVF repeater for composition.) Looks like that camera has them.
I’ve seen other cameras with bigger pixel counts end up with worse pictures because of shortcuts in lens or sensor taken to squeeze a bigger number out for the label.
