Well General Taylor, he’s all the go; walk him along, John, carry him along
Did I post about the concert the other day?
Great Big Sea came to the Michigan Theatre on Tuesday, and they’re my favorite live act. They’ve got incredible energy, and it is abundantly clear that they’re ridiculously happy doing what they do. Various large and small basses, the bodhran, flute, accordion, other drums and guitars of various sorts, all played by 5 people, acoustically, mostly. It was a sweaty, jumpy, clappy, laughing experience, as always.
But I swear it won’t be long
There isn’t that much ocean
Between Boston and St. John’s
I’m a rover, and I’m bound to sail away
I’m a rover
Can you love me anyway?
The venue was clearly sold out, being thick with people. I think I counted three or four people who left before the final song (after the encore) played. Admittedly, there wasn’t as much dancing this time, but everyone stood and we were clapping for hours. HOURS. And we didn’t care. There was only one person running the Swag booth, and it was crowded with people, but everyone waited patiently.
Katrina and I were clearly the dancingest dancers out there, which was made easier by the lil kid next to me moving out into the aisle whenever people stood.
Your friends are drinking alone
But it’s funny, they don’t even cross your mind
When she asks you into her home
They played some of my favorite songs, leaving out only General Taylor. GBS plays classic pub/sea songs from Newfoundland, Canada, as well as their own unique tracks.
Katrina and I met up with Anne, Laura, Matt, and their friends at Red Hawk beforehand, where we had absolutely the most hilariously bad service since, well, any time I can recall. Keep in mind that I enjoy snarky and sarcastic waitresses. In fact, I prefer them. No, she just didn’t want anything to do with us. The check was an exercise in bistromathics, in that she required exact numbers from those of us with credit cards, yet didn’t include tax or tip in those numbers, even though we were required to leave 18%.
I’m certain we warped time and space.
I’m seldom sober
I’m a rover of high degree
and when I’m drinking
I’m always thinking
of how to gain my love’s company
Nonetheless, we shared a lot of laughs, and that’s what I think of when I think of GBS – getting together with friendly people and digging good music together, as well as the company, and I couldn’t ask for finer company. OH! By the horns of William H. Macy, in some strange coincidence, Chuck called me while we were eating, to impart some geekery that made him think of me. After discovering who I was with, he insisted I inform them that they must kiss me on the cheek. Not being a bloke to interfere with Chuck’s wishes (particularly when they involve smooches for yours truly), I imparted the directive.
*pink* They obliged. Every evening is improved with kissery, don’t you think? :D
I’m listening to the GBS DVD as I type… Yes, you’d think I’d be typing something work-related, wouldn’t you? Well, that’s what my boss would think. *grin* What, does every canadian band have witty banter?
Was ne’er paired with a wife
Though sometimes with lasses he links
He’s a seafaring sailmate
Can gambol and caper
