Wow, “To me, it is now a question of sovereignty”

Napoli suggested that if it was a case of “simple rape,” there should be no thoughts of ending a pregnancy. Letters by the hundreds appeared in local newspapers, mostly written by women, challenging Napoli’s description of rape as “simple.” He has yet to explain satisfactorily what he meant by “simple rape.”

The President of the Oglala Sioux Tribe on the Pine Ridge Reservation, Cecilia Fire Thunder, was incensed. A former nurse and healthcare giver she was very angry that a state body made up mostly of white males, would make such a stupid law against women.

“To me, it is now a question of sovereignty,” she said to me last week. “I will personally establish a Planned Parenthood clinic on my own land which is within the boundaries of the Pine Ridge Reservation where the State of South Dakota has absolutely no jurisdiction.”

I find it amusing that this smack by an indian tribe comes from a state named after an indian tribe. Make fucked up laws, see where it gets you. Sovereign land, bitches. (thanks kreie)

  1. I wonder if outsiders will be allowed to come onto tribal land to use the service.

  2. Man, sounds like someone needs to “simply rape” Napoli.

Okay, not really. But damned, WTF is “simple rape”? That’s like “a little bit pregnant” or “mostly dead”.

    • “Whoo-hoo-hoo, look who knows so much. It just so happens that your friend here is only MOSTLY dead. There’s a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there’s usually only one thing you can do. Go through his clothes and look for loose change. “

    • but…why not really?

      • Because I am firmly anti-rape in all it’s forms, in all honesty. I’ve worked too many years against rape against women to be able to say, even half-jokingly, that someone, anyone, should be raped. Posting the above comment was about the limits of my sensabilities, and only because of the “not really” part.

  3. I hate our current political climate.

    • Listening to news on the radio makes me want to cry. Seriously. I get anxious and upset.

      • Yup.

Plus, sometimes I read the newspaper and have this weird feeling that I’m actually reading the Onion, or I watch real news and have this weird feeling that I’m actually watching the Daily Show…

…and then I remember that this IS ACTUALLY THE NEWS and I die a little inside.

        • *sigh* This is where we were born, and likely where we will live out our lives. It may possibly, just possibly, be true that there is no better place to live out there right now. But you know what? That just makes it all the worse.

There’s never been a truly -rational- period in american life, but we have always equalized, found some sort of balance, over the long-term, between people who believe other people have the right to live as they please and people who think they are the arbiters of justice, the morality police, the ultimate decision-makers for entire populations (or the world as a whole).

Now we live in a time when politicians, without any remorse or guilt, will redefine the districts in their area so that they will not only gain seats in the upcoming election, but will permanently unbalance their region, changing the structure so that there will be no tilting back of the playing field.

How does one handle that? Shit, SanFran can’t hold all of us.

          Agreed!

        • Yes. It’s scary. Very scary.

Which is why I have quit reading the paper, and watching the news. The stress was bad for my health.

I know that’s not the best way to deal with things, but right now it’s all I got.

          • Ditto.

          • I find that my little bubble world is often quite happier because I don’t get any sort of news except that which finds its way on to my friendslist. That being said, I hope nothing urgent happens, or if it does, someone on my friendslist (or Phaedra’s or Ozy’s for that matter) posts something about it.

  4. I’ve been following this thread in another journal, through another friend…

posted about this yesterday, with a link to ‘s post about it. There was a lot of interesting comments, including what Napoli considered not-so-simple-rape:

“…brutally raped, savaged. The girl was a virgin. She was religious. She planned on saving her virginity until she was married. She was brutalized and raped, sodomized as bad as you can possibly make it, and is impregnated.”

…Which tied it directly in to being a Christian and wanting to save their virginity, which makes me ill.

Please take a look at the other comments and threads from his post.

    • Re: I’ve been following this thread in another journal, through another friend…

Err… saving virginity doesn’t make me ill… disappointed when I was younger, but not ill. His opinions on the matter make me ill.

Also in the post is information on how to donate to the tribe to help them out.
