Burger King: Taking Care of the Common Man in ‘the D’
You know, I’m really happy that Burger King has decided to look out for
the illiterate population in downtown Detroit. Too many people have
openly mocked those poor souls, and I’m so I’m glad they’ve taken a
stand in meeting their needs.
… what?
What has always gotten me is how the hell could they read the sign to know picture menus are available?
*remembers to add “snark” tag to the post*
Yes.
There was a signs book at the store last night I would have loved to buy. The cover was funny.
One of them was a big sign stating Evaculation Route then underneath of it was another sign stating no thru traffic.

I figured they were just gearing up for the influx of illegal immigrants. They need to eat too.
Ah, good point!
But how do they order? Point?
Yup. International sign language. Pointing means “gimmeee that”

That’s how I ordered food in Japan :)
Thankfully, Mcdonalds there uses picture menus on placemats for easy pointing.
Less thankful is the fact that if they’re out of coke, you’re in for a wonderful 2 minutes of confusion.

I’m just glad that illiterate people are driving.
It gets worse…
There’s braille on the keypads of drive up ATM machines.

aren’t those BK signs standard? i know brighton has one.
That is the weirdest icon ever.
I didn’t really think it was specific to Detroit, that’s just where I was when I saw it.
the icon is from an email. i’ll send it to you.

While I understand…
While I understand the point is to be a goof, I’m just such a doofus that I need to say this…
… The picture menus are not just for people who cannot read, they’re also for people who cannot speak or for people who can read some English but not all of it, or for people who cannot make themself clear.
They do honestly have people who can read the menu and then point at what they want, which is prety cool.
But, honestly, there’s no way to communicate to “the general public” without words in a clear fashion. Words are amazing that way.
