An Inconvenient Truth
This documentary does two things well: Address the skepticisms of people regarding global warming and reveal Gore as a human being (no, that isn’t granted, he’s a politician) who was interested in this cause long before he was running for VP. In fact, if I remember correctly, he was a student of the first scientist to concern themselves with the CO2 trend in the 60’s. His class was looking at the data after it had only been recorded for a few years, and saw the signs of what was coming.
I have a friend who is skeptical not of global warming itself, but of man’s involvement in global warming. We discussed what was presented, and he agrees that the evidence presented in the 100 minutes of An Inconvenient Truth is wide and inarguable.
to the scientists
He tackles that questions a good half-dozen times and in different ways, and let me tell you, if you’re looking at the CO2 content of the air and the correlating temperatures for the last seven ice age cycles and comparing them with the spike we’ve created in the past 50 years, you simply cannot deny that we are the difference.
Some people won’t see the movie because they consider it a vehicle for Gore to reenter the limelight. That may be true, but consider one of the facts he brought up in his presentation:
There are approximately 9200 scientific studies on global warming. There was a huge study of these studies, they examined 10% of them for a fair statistical sampling, and discovered that of 920-some studies, there is not one that was skeptical of global warming. Not one.
On the other hand, a similar analysis of news articles on global warming found that a little over half of them were skeptical of global warming.
I think it’s disturbing when we don’t listen to the scientists who say they’re scared of what the next 50 years will hold for the population of the earth.
With that all said, I doubt that many people who believe that global warming doesn’t exist, isn’t our fault if it does, and isn’t dangerous if it is, will see this movie. Gore is just too political a figure, and while he combats that idea of him very thoroughly in this movie, I think that battle needs to be fought first in the marketing of the movie.
You can’t have a dialogue with someone whose mind is already made up, these days. Belief trumps fact, and I sincerely think that we’ll have to wait until there are cities underwater before drastic steps are taken. Yay for living inland!
I ended up not seeing it Friday, since my friend that wanted to go with me ended up having to work at the last minute. I’m hoping to hit it this week however, if for no other reason than to build up an argument the next time I debate my friend who is insistent that it’s just the natural heating and cooling cycle of the Earth ;p

Thanks for the review. I’ll definitely check it out.
