I hate you, Congressman McCotter

Okay, so it’s bad enough that this dude sends me (unsolicited) a fancy full-color fold-out list of how awesome he is, it being fully-funded by the taxpayer. These are fucking expensive.

It’s worse that his staff has no sense of information architecture, and has a checkboxed area under “PLEASE TELL ME YOUR TOP CONCERNS” that reads:

_ World War on Terror
_ Economy
_ Tax Relief
_ Controlling Spending
(etc)
_ Education
_ Sign me up for e-mail updates!

… sir! my top concern is that you sign me up for e-mail updates. And don’t you forget it, mister, I’m a voter!

But please, Congressman Thaddeus, tell me this: how does approving legislation that “Prohibits federal funds from being used to print ballots in any language other than English” fall under the heading of Protecting Our Borders??

ILLEGAL ALIENS CAN’T VOTE.

You incompetent, bigoted dumb-ass.

  1. have you told him this?

    • This was about 5 minutes after I received it, so, no.

      • heee i realize that. i’m serious, though. maybe tweak the wording just a bit, but let the guy know how you feel. he’ll likely leave you alone, but from what i’ve learned about our state and federal representatives – they do keep track of their contacts and feedback. let the guy know you dislike his policies and stances and that his PR materials suck eggs.

  2. Just as an FYI… there are many American citizens who do not speak or read English. I know several, in fact.

But the guy IS a dumbass. :)

    • “Just as an FYI… there are many American citizens who do not speak or read English. I know several, in fact.”

Read it again, please. I am very aware that there are many american citizens who can’t speak or read english. However, they are american citizens. Is he trying to protect our borders from people who legally are entitled to be here?

  3. I’ll agree that it doesn’t fall under the heading of protecting our borders, but I also must agree that Federal funds should not be used to print multilingual ballots. If a special group wants to put money towards that so be it. But we have enough monetaryy problems in this country. Our national language is English. I don’t see any reason to spend taxpayer money on ballots in other languages.

    • Actually, we do not at present have a national language. Canada has two, we have none.

Also, have you ever heard of disenfranchisement? It applies in this situation. You can’t say that you won’t accomodate handicapped voters, blind voters, voters who can’t read at all, OR voters who can’t read english.

It is the right of EVERY citizen to be able to vote, even those who cannot speak english.

      • I cannot improve upon this reply.

      • or rather, it is the right of every CITIZEN to vote…
        and yes, I completely agree.

I also agree that you SHOULD bother to let him know all this.

      • Hmm. Upon looking into this further, I stand corrected. You are right and I concede that ballots should be available in languages other than English.

The above was a knee jerk response because of my growing annoyance at the growing expectation that everything must be available in languages other than English or it is somehow discrimination. On voting, I concede. That is a basic right that citizens should have access to even if they don’t know English.

  4. I think you should print out this entry, staple it to the fancy full color thingy he sent you and mail it back to his house. :-p
