Instant Messaging poll

Color me curious, I’m not trying to make a point here, just wanting to know how people operate:

  1. I enjoy Instant Messaging when I’m online, but I am often invisible, or at least, invisible to certain people.

    • I consider “invisible to certain people” to be different.

Also, it’s unreliable because anyone can make a new IM. *s*

  2. I sometimes specify my away messages, but usually I just go for the default. I don’t turn on messengers (I use Trillian so I’ve got several) unless I really am available to chat with folks. I hardly ever do invisible – I’ll only go invisible if I’m either really busy or in a bad mood but I really need to talk to a certain person and I can’t just phone the person.

  3. I can’t really answer the poll (none of my answers fit). I have IM open during the work day, but as I’ve been stressed out, under a huge deadline, extremely busy, working on weekends, etc., I’ve been using different messages.

IMs tend to drift, so unless it’s a conversation that I need to leave for a reason, I don’t tend to say bye.

    • That’s fair – whenever a poll is made without an “other” slot, you always have people who don’t fit.

Technically, I’m a range of some things – for instance I like specific messages, but I often couple direct messages with, say, song lyrics and such.

      • I used to use song lyrics as journal entry titles, right now my current IM message is used because I’m po’d that I worked from about 12 p.m. yesterday through um…..6:49 a.m. this morning…

  4. All of my votes were from back when I was able to spend a large amount of time online. Recent developments in life preclude this behavior. Not that I would be back to it in a heartbeat if I didn’t have to work :)

  5. I always say good bye to certain people. But only a few, and they’re the people who get fussy if you don’t.

  6. IMing is different than texting because you can have actual conversations and say whatever you want however you want online. Texting is a short form message system only, with limits and cost involved. It’s useful for saying “hi” or planning activities, but you don’t have the freedom to be verbose.

    • I use predictive text, and am usually texting other Verizon folks, so I can do it on an unlimited basis. There have been many times Ive exchanged 10 or so messages back and forth. Sometimes I cant be on IM, like when things get crazy at work, but I can still reach into my pocket to reply to a text.

      • “predictive text”?

        • Ahh, without predictive text, phone texting would be a HUGE burden! basically, 95% of the words you use are already in the phone’s dictionary – instead of hitting 4 twice, 8 twice, and 4 once to say “hug”, I just hit 484, and if it isn’t the right word (it often is) I hit “right” on the direction pad until the right word comes up.

  7. I only use IM when I’m “ninja-ing” over on b.net… and only to communicate with other ninjas or to receive warnings about forum misbehaviour. I’m not comfortable with IM as a social exchange, because my typing speed is a lot faster than my tact speed…

    — Steve’s fairly certain he’s headed off some friendships at the pass thanks to incautious IMs in his misspent ‘net-youth.

  8. I use IM rarely, just when I know I’m available to chat.

I used to be very fussy about IM but not so much anymore.

  9. I needed to be able to check several options for some of those first questions. Sometimes I’m specific and sometimes I’m obscure..

  10. For me, leaving IM open is like leaving my phone on. There are some people whom I only really speak to through IM, and even though sometimes days go by without me actually speaking to someone via IM, oh well. And I’m a compulsive away message checker.

Texting is different from IMing by the simple fact that it’s a pay-per basis for some people, it takes longer, and it way more inconvenient. (for instance, I can already be on my computer & easily switch over to IM, but if I’m already on my phone and someone texts, that’s an annoyance.)

  11. holy poll batman! i haven’t seen so many responses to a poll ever!
