I find myself totally fascinated that this pope in particular seems to be so much more diplomatic than anyone anticipated considering he looks so very, very evil.
In the past few days he more or less totally defused the situation of islamic outrage by participating in a prayer at a mosque in turkey, including praying (or quietly contemplating towards god, as some people have equivocated) in the direction of mecca.
Honestly, it sounds like he was just behaving originally like a clueless academic.
(he referred to an ancient quote that said muslims were violent and evil, if I recall correctly, in the context of an academic speech, and of course they freaked out. I’m sure has a better handle on what was actually said.)
It gives me a teensy weensy bit of faith that we’re not going to die in some huge explosion of multi-oriented religious angst.
And, of course, since I didn’t write it down immediately, I’ve forgotten the exact words, but remember the idea of it. It was a Turkish protester speaking about the Pope’s visit, and his earlier comments:
“We believe in the teachings of Jesus and follow his word, you do not know or believe in the teachings of Mohammad, and do not seem to follow Jesus, either!”
I didn’t think it pertained exactly to the Pope, considering some of the other things I’ve read/heard about him, however the quote rung true for a lot of other applications.
It looks like you’re linking to the slideshow, from image one, rather than to specific images :(
poo! fixed, I think.
*cries* No more picture of Pope Sidious!

Heres a little tidbit.
The Pope wears Prada, ::Insert your own joke here::
Oh? (I haven’t been paying any attention to him…)

wow. that’s remarkably… not evil. I haven’t been following along on his behaviour at all.
glad you mentioned it, I may keep up now.

I just read an article about this on the BBC (thanks to your bringing it up). That’s pretty impressive.
Is that pope casting auguries? Diplomatic is damn right.
I heard a wonderful quote on NPR…
