Seen on the intarweb

Resistance can be thought of as anything that pulls us away from
doing the work we know is most important to us.
It takes many forms
(including procrastination, fear, distraction, and negative self-talk), but
the effect is often similar: we find or permit all kinds of barriers to keep
us from becoming the person we want to be, or from completing the thing we
really want to make.”

Unrelatedly, this from Ad Age:

*GARFIELD*: I want to ask you one more thing: Those Mac ads — how do you
feel about the John Hodgman character?

*GATES*: I can’t comment on someone else’s ad.

*GARFIELD*: OK … but he’s you.

*GATES*: Yeah, I’m not gonna comment on someone else’s ad.

*GARFIELD*: OK, well, Bill Gates, thank you so much for joining us.

(Silence)

*GARFIELD*: Can I just have a clean goodbye?

(Silence)

*GARFIELD*: OK, can you just say goodbye? Thank you or goodbye or something
like that?

*GATES*: Goodbye.

  1. it sounds like he’d gotten up and was walking away. That’s fucking funny.

  2. To be fair, reading the entire transcript (I’m at work so I can’t listen to the audio), it DID appear as if the reporter was baiting Gates throughout the entire interview. What with the snide comments about “branded philanthropy” and the unnecessary references to Vista’s “flat, 2D” marketing campaign and all. If I went into what I thought was going to be a straight interview and found myself getting ambushed like that, I’d be pretty pissed, too.

    • Maybe. I don’t know, I also think it’s the responsibility for reporters, when talking to a CEO, to get underneath the stumping they are paid to do, and ask difficult questions about things like software or marketing flaws.

I think Mr. Gates is notoriously bad at handling difficult interview questions, and always has been. He takes it awfully personally.

Perhaps I feel that way because I’m surrounded by reporters, though, and I watch them talk about children and fishing with the Ford/GM CEO before hacking them to verbal pieces. Y’know?
