GPS deets
Generally, my covet list is gadgety pie-in-the-sky goodness – things still in R&D. However, mum expressed an interest in picking up a GPS for me for christmas, so I figured I’d better figure out what the heck I want, and try to keep it (relatively) cheap.
The whole thing makes my head ache. There are so many options, and it’s such a subjective experience. The Mio H610 has all the features I need without the bloat I don’t, but it’s tiny, tiny tiny.
The Magellan 4000 seems larger and has a better record, but what’s the navigation like? I couldn’t play audio books or music through it, though that’s not a terrible tragedy, since I have my shuffle.
This TomTom ONE XL has a nice large screen, but I just heard someone complain the other day about how the interface infuriated them. Now, I’ve never used it, maybe it’d be easier for me, but that makes me hesitate. … and there’s the TomTom ONE third edition (yes, how confusing is that?!) which isn’t as large, but has the latest system updates.
*boggle*
And I thought computer upgrades were a PITA.

my two cents
I own a TomTom OneXL and I love it. There are a few things about it that I would change, but then again my jobis in HCI stuff so I feel like my issues are really nit-picky. I’ve never played with other GPS navigators so I can’t really compare and contrast. Did the person who complained give any specifics about the interface? I’ve found the interface rather easy to use and intuitive. My best advice…go to Best Buy or Circuit City and play around with the GPS devices there, get a feel for them and what you prefer.
Re: my two cents
Thanks, that’s a good idea. I am also a stickler for interface design, so it’s possible your nit-picks will be mine, as well. :D
