Next Band Name: Solid State Covet
120 gig Solid State drives, anyone?
This is so sweet. Hard drives as we know them will soon face extinction as solid state (Serial ATA, even) drives continue to grow in size.
What’s the big deal, my non-techie friends ask? I’m so glad you did!
SSD hard drives are similar to your pocket flash drive. They’re fast, reasonably impervious to shock, have zero moving parts, and are completely, totally silent.
So if you built a computer with an SSD drive and passive air circulation (fanless), it would be utterly quiet. Until you played a DVD. :D
I love the future! :D
EDIT: In other covetous news, I present to you The Steampunk Web Cam. Hot.
EDIT 2: The No-jack phone is intended for people who don’t have a land line. It shifts your cell phone calls to a normal-size land line style phone. How cool is that?
EDIT 3:
The awesomest clock
How much do I love you, that I’m editing my posts instead of making 6 in one day?
I’ll just chime in here. Through my job I know people working on putting 1TB in 10cm^3.
When that technology will be come commercially available, I don’t know, but it’s out there. ;)
Nice! Of course the question becomes, how fast can I access it, how long will it store there, and how long will the drive operate?
Not that I would kick out of bed a 10-cube 10TB block of that wonderstuff for longterm storage. :D
Well, it’s military technology, so you can bet it’ll last long/hold up better than commercial stuff. ;)

Dude, just take the time to rip the DVD to the silent drive first! Oh man, that would be hot.
Just to prove to others and myself that I’m not a complete luddite/hater-of-all-that-is-new, this is exciting. Solid-state drives totally pwn traditional hard drives
Damn, I’ve been drooling over those SSDs for a while down at the 30GB level… mainly for my Origami, because it draws so much less power and gives off so much less heat. Making them moar heug just makes the drool pour out faster.
Sadly, none of them seem to be coming in 1.8″ format to slot into my wee baby.
— Steve also agrees that the clockwork clock display is nifty, but wouldn’t want one unless the workings were under glass. (His housekeeping is legendarily bad.)
Actually, “The new 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch MLC NAND slabs with SATA interfaces will ship in three capacities: 32GB, 64GB, and the big daddy 128GB.”
Man, I must be more tired than I thought; totally forgot to read the link.
— Steve’s going to need a lobster bib. And a bigger gadget budget.
