Not my finest hour

The sharp pain in my throat has persisted. I took a picture of it, though I’m not posting it to save your sensibilities and, perhaps, lunch. Lucy and I agree (in our amateur way) that it isn’t strep, but have little clue, otherwise, so I’ve got an appt. with my doctor tomorrow. My theory is that I scratched the back of my throat with sharp food and there was infection.

Neither of us are really familiar with your typical tonsilitis though, so maybe it’s that. That would suck, on my vacation.

Alas, I haven’t seen my doctor for a few years, and he’s moved. To Tecumseh, MI. So I’ll be driving an hour to see him.

But see him I will, because he’s been pretty awesome so far and so many people have bad doctor experiences – I’m not going to go see an asshole when I’m sick, know what I mean?

Meanwhile, I’ve been taking my various painkillers and decimating a bag of strawberry halls. My teeth are going to be pissed at me when this is over, but it provides immediate relief to the kind of pain that makes all of your muscles tense up, whenever I swallow.

I’ve also been gargling with saltwater at various points, just to keep you up on my home remedies.

It’s funny, I may get sick only once a year, but it’s totally unpredictable as to what that entails.

EDIT: Okay, so most of you know my relationship with my mom is warm but not exactly intimate. Still, I called her, and she’s sick too, and after hanging up… well, yeah, it did make me feel better.

I’m about to have more green tea with honey, and take my multivitamin and vitamin c. Take that!

  1. Eat a clove of garlic. I would recommend eating it with pita or bread. Something to help calm the tummy because garlic is HOT in the belly but omg does it help.

  2. And here you were – laughing at me when I suggested a doctor last week…

I hope you feel better soon babe! Especially before you head off on vacation!

  3. Tonsillitis is the kind of pain that starts at the top of your skull, goes through your neck, and down through your shoulders. It’s technically located in your throat but it spreads rather impressively, and just riding in cars is rather painful.

    • Well, I can say I don’t have that – it’s really localized, it’s just intense. It’s powerful enough that when I’m not taking anything and haven’t had a halls in awhile, I don’t want to move my jaw.

      • It could be something as esoteric as a tooth infection or abscess. At any rate, here’s hoping the doc clears you up!

        • Well, at least on that front, I’ve actually seen the spot of torment, and I’ve had enough tooth pain in the past to rule that out.

I rather wish the doc had time today, and that he didn’t work so bloomin’ far away. *mutter grumble*

  4. Technically any infection of the throat is tonsillitis.

Strep just means that the particular strain of bacteria causing the infection is one of the members of the streptococcus family.

Now, strep strains usually cause large white patches on the back of the throat because of how the bacteria grows. This is not always the case however and other strains of bacteria can cause those as well.

{{grin}} Sorry, daughter of a pharmacist who has not lived a year of her life without 1-3 throat infections.

    • Wow, that’s intense! I feel lucky not to have had this kind of problem in the past.

Thanks for the added info, *hugs*. I knew that breaking tonsillitis into its root simply gave you ‘infection of the tonsils’, but I presumed there was a specific variety that was typically experienced and caused people to get them removed.

  5. I used to get tonsilitis/strep regularly when I was taking worse care of myself and just felt like the Worst Sore Throat Ever added to difficulty swallowing because my tonsils got so infected and swollen. It wasn’t the worst pain I’ve ever felt and not nearly as bad as others here have mentioned, but it did make me feel really lousy and I got it like clockwork 1 to 3 times a winter every year for 4 or 5 years.

You’re already doing all the things I’d suggest from when I always had it, so nothing helpful from me there. Stay hydrated, even if it hurts like hell to swallow!

    *hugs*

  6. While you’re in Tecumseh, you should visit my mom!! And I hope you two don’t have the same doctor, because he’s a little shady and she’s thinking of changing.

Good luck, my dear! Feel better soon.

  7. I wanna see the pic anyway!

I’m just gross like that though. :D

  8. BAH to halls and any other throat lozenge – CEPACOL IS THE ONLY GOOD STUFF AND IT WILL WORK WONDERS. Without killing your teeth. I recommend the honey lemon flavor, as it actually tastes good.

Seriously though, they are the only thing that does ANYTHING to my throat – and I got them from health services in college as the best you could use. You should get some of those.

This is my only good mouth icon – I couldn’t resist! I do hope you feel better soooon!

    • Thanks, actually I was just at the store for other sundries and, coincidentally, picked up said lozenges. They certainly do the job.

    • PS this is my only real “mouth” icon.

      • haha, that icon is so perfect for this post! You should have used that in the first place!!!

I am also amused that you happened to get the Cepacol lozenges. I am constantly recommending them to people – I hope they work well enough to keep you feelin’ okay until you can get to the doctor.

  9. I’m sorry you are sick. :(

    *hugs*
(while wearing a full biohazard suit, of course.)

    Feel better soon!
