Government,
I wanted to thank you for spending $43 million on a notice about how I should expect a the economic stimulus ‘payment’ in May. Though I nearly threw it out when I saw the spam-tastic phrase, “DO NOT THROW AWAY!” in bold red letters on the front, I was curious enough to tear it open, and boy am I lucky I did!
See, I would have killed myself today, due to my owing so much money, but that damned waiting period kept me from buying a shotgun. However, the three- to six-hundred-dollar check will be just the thing to pay my extensive bills.
… what do you mean, I shouldn’t spend it on old bills? My bills are already calculated into our economic figures? So… only new debt, then. Government, I- … I’m not sure that’s …
Whoa, is it true that the PS3 is the only Blu-ray player that hasn’t gone up a hundred bucks since HD-DVD went ka-put? Shit, I’d better get on that!
Anyway, I just hope you know how much I appreciate you spending my money in order to tell me how you’re going to give me my money back someday soon.
Sincerely,
Skennedy

It’s funny because it’s true.

I was amused when I got one, because I already know I’m not going to be getting that payment.
Thanks for spending my money to let me know I’m going to be getting something I’m not going to get!
*laugh!*

When did you get that letter? I hope you don’t have to have it to get your check, as I might have inadvertently thrown mine away! Oops!
It came today. No, they’re just sending checks, you don’t (and can’t) do anything.
Actually, if you don’t file your taxes this year, regardless of whether or not your have to, you won’t see a dime of that check.
Well, ya. we’re all workin’ stiffs though.

Yeeaaah.. So. You can buy a PS3 with 2 games (I personally recomened Resistance: Fall of Man and Uncharted, Drakes Fortune) for just over 500 bucks or so.
So yeah. Hop on it.
Like I did.

I think the Trans Am is going to get treated to this:
Fun!

I have a few insistent creditors that will be placated with this. Screw spending it recklessly.
I’m right there with you. As much as I’d love to get my new 1TB SATA drive and a couple more gigs of RAM, I’m getting kinda tired of dodging calls from Sallie Mae. This whole “adult” thing kinda sucks.
I consider myself very lucky – I consolidated my student loans just before the big hike a couple years ago. Not Sallie Mae, either – my mom gave me the tip through her business.
My wife and I consolidated ours years back, but unfortunately we went through Sallie Mae. We’re starting college funds for our kids as soon as we finish paying off our loans (hopefully sometime next year) so they never have to deal with it.

Do people get these letters after they file this year’s taxes or what? I’ve yet to see such a letter in my mailbox, but then, I was too poor to get the last one (ironic, isn’t it?)
Oh, and just a tip, but there’s never been any sort of waiting period on shotguns or long guns of any type. I’ve personally did the cash and carry thing with long guns several times. ;-)
I don’t believe so, because (not being sarcastic for a moment) I believe the entire point of sending them out, as far as they were concerned, was to convince people to send in their taxes.

Even as early as 6:43am, this made me crack up. Most things can’t make me laugh at all this early. I love this post. I’m sure JT will love it, too.

Where did you get this? I didn’t see any mention of such things in the letter.
Public radio. I did not intend to imply that the government bold-facedly told people what to do with their money in this letter.

You CAN use it to pay off old debt, especially if it’s a past-due mortgage payment, thus helping to fend off the imminent economic collapse due to people not paying back their debts. Really, it’s okay.
Whew!

If I heard correctly, there are 2 notices then the check. My boss was saying how some mail house must be rolling in it over this.
Are they really going to send them to every household? Or is it every household that filled out taxes last year? I’m not sure what list they’re using, I just know I’m on it. ;)
They’re sending notices to everyone who files this year, and some people who haven’t filed who receive social security and veteran’s benefits.

Then there’s those of us utterly screwed because we had to move after filing (was not exactly a planned move) and the government does not forward mail.

i’m sad..i won’t get that check because i’m a dependent under my mom..but she won’t get extra money for me because i’m over the age limit :(
Aw, that is sad indeed. Are you sure there’s an age limit, or is it just “dependent or not dependent” ?
