Nintendo President says, “We were total douches for not including a hard drive. Sorry.”

“Statistically speaking, it is true that there are a small number of customers who feel that the flash memory is too small, while many others find that they have plenty of memory,” says Iwata. “However, because this small number of people are none other than the most avid players, we know we have to review the best possible solution to eliminate their inconvenience.” Interesting bit in that last line, if we may say so. – article

Srsly. This rock band thing without downloadable content? So lame. Harmonix blames it directly on the lack of storage space on the Wii. Let’s get that fixed, eh?

EDIT: Well, I guess they did. Sorta.

MTV Games, Harmonix, and EA will be releasing the Rock Band Track Pack Volume 1 for the PS2 and the Wii on July 15th. $29.99 at your local game purveyor nets you an additional 20 songs for the game, chosen from the DLC already available on the PS3 and 360. It’s an okay mix I suppose, with some of my favorites – NIN’s “March of the Pigs”, Faith No More’s “We Care A Lot”, and Weezer’s “Buddy Holly”, but I much prefer being able to pick and choose my songs rather than be handed a chunk all at once. – Full List

  1. I bet they’ll be introducing a Wii with a hard drive for either this or next Christmas.

Of course, the real question is what they’ll do for us early adopters…

    • I don’t think they’ll come with hard drives as such – I think it’ll be in the form of more flash memory, or the capability to write to a flash drive directly from a game. Their problem is going to be how to do that without making it even easier for people to hack the system.

(as far as hacking the system goes currently, I think the hackers fucked themselves hard when they found a way to download VC games without paying. That’s, like, real money they’re stealing, and I doubt Nintendo will take that lying down.)

      • Eew, I hadn’t heard about the hacking. I’ve bought a few VC games, but not many. My rule is that I am not allowed to buy one unless I plan to play it immediately. That prevents me from going broke just to fill out my collection.

I find it interesting that I feel it wrong to illegally obtain VC games, while I have something like 8 billion ROMS on my PC. Maybe because I got into emulation back when that was the only way I could play those games, and because I feel that the VC prices are okay (or at least not totally outrageous). It’s worth it to me to pay $10 for a copy of Link to the Past that I can play on my TV, even though I could play it for free in emulated form on my computer (or dig out the SNES, if it really came to that).

        I’m babbling. Sorry. :)

        • Funny, I’m making ringtones for my phone right now from the ZREO website (you should check it out if you haven’t already) and though their Link to the Past ones aren’t the best they’ve done, they’re still my favorites ’cause I enjoyed it so much.

I prefer to play most emulated games on my laptop, same way, but I have Super Mario World and Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap on the Wii.

I agree, though, it’s particularly stupid to do it that way. If they’d stuck to making the wii play emulated games (as some have done), I’d have been fine with it.

  3. Still can’t make a band. No band or world tour = No buy.

I don’t understand why they just can’t open the read from the SD card. Sometimes I hate Nintendo.

    • They’re trying to avoid making it easy for hackers. Unfortunately for them, it’s already delightfully easy for hackers.
