I’d like to use my lifeline, please

Do any of you use a particular program to capture video?

See, I’m trying to find an efficient method for capturing lucy’s family video, and the app that comes with the Dazzle hardware is, in a word, horrifyingly bad in everything but results (it actually produces a decent AVI – if it doesn’t crash).

I can’t use Premiere, because it only works with firewire, not USB.

So I’m on the hunt for a freeware solution (or one I can abscond with, I’m not proud)!

Anyway, if any of you have a particular program you use for, say, pulling video off the TV or whathaveyou, please leave me your wisdom here.

  1. All my solutions are Linux based. Having said that, you can use a Myth live CD and capture the video that way.

  2. Get a DV bridge on eBay and use that to capture via FW?

    • Even on eBay, you’re still talking 500 and a week for shipping – I am trying to find a solution I can implement immediately using my given equipment – a cheesy Dazzle USB break-out box and SVHS deck. At least it does S-Video.

I appreciate the advice, though – if I were to do this on a regular basis, I might make that outlay, but I doubt I would – it takes forever.

I tell you what though – working with these VHS tapes renews my appreciation for the P2 cards I use at work. I never want to go back to analog 1xspeed capture again.

      • That’s not right. Here’s one for <$65, shipped. I've got the version of that with a TV tuner.

There’s also some Sony ones (can’t remember the name right now) that usually go for about $120.

  3. I use a free program called VLC but I’m not certain if it will work for the purpose you mention. I know it can capture images. Please forgive my ineptness if this is all completely wrong.

    Here is the link

There were a few other capture programs mentioned here, but I don’t know if they do video

  4. So then, what you really want to do is to borrow my Firewire Pinnacle device?

    • Ha! I was not aware that you had one.

I am surviving thus far on Windows Movie Maker. Not exciting, but at least better than the dazzle’s software.

      • I’m pretty sure that I mentioned it when you were considering ordering your Dazzle, but no worry, I’ll be happy to pull it out and let you have a play with it. (Or maybe I’ll have to have someone with a less hairy chest do that part – I seem to have made it dirty.) I’ve got the Pinnacle capture program, too, but Premiere is a better choice, no doubt.

PS – then you can teach me how to use Premiere, hah!

  5. I can’t help with all of that craziness (I see your lifeline and raise you another!), but guess who I saw today!!!!???? TOM! Remember when you came to Buffalo to meet me and we hung out with my friend tom? well, he lives in Alaska now, but he came down to visit with his partner, so I finally got to meet him and hang out with the two of them!!! true to form, the three of us polished off two pitchers of margaritas, far too many nachos, and had a generally awesome time. He asked about you-and said to say “HI!!!” lots of xo’s, talk soon, Julie. oh! he also brought me a gift: a bumper sticker that says “Alaska: COOLEST state with the HOTTEST governor/vp” haha. not sure where I’ll be putting it-but still. classic.
