Now this is the kind of meme I can get behind.
I love it when my friends get together, especially from diverse groups. I’ll forget introducing people, and months later find out they’re fast friends – how awesome is that?
There was a friending frenzy on another journal, and it seemed to work out well so I thought I’d jump in.
Coment with some personal information about yourself, explaining why someone would want to read your journal; interesting people should find each other. ;)
You must, in addition, list your favorite music artist and your favorite book. I don’t care how you define favorite, as long as you don’t wuss out by saying you can’t decide. Pick something! Pick ten somethings!
I’ll start (and you needn’t be as verbose):
Skennedy here. My journal is not amazingly compelling at present – I share most of my cool links on Google Reader, frankly.
Sometimes, though, I write something of significance so I can be smugly impressed with myself. :) I talk about the nature of emotion, my love of learning, growth, video editing, my latest rant about crappy marketing tactics, and my snarky, attractive fiancee.
Mostly, I’m good to be friended because I’m a frequent commenter, and can be guaranteed to have an opinion on everything.
Music:
I like music with harmony, dissonance, or amazing lyrics. I like Poe, Ani DiFranco and the Indigo Girls, and I like Great Big Sea, the Decemberists, and Gaelic Storm. I dig White Zombie, (old) Metallica and Guns n Roses, and MC Frontalot, MC Chris and Massive Attack.Books:
The last book I’ve finished was Saturn’s Children by Charles Stross. Previous to that, I finished a manuscript from Cory Doctorow for Makers – I identified with where he was going with it, and found it a good read.My favorite book from my teen years was The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. My favorite book when I was 10 (and the book I’ve reread more than any other) is The Talisman by Stephen King – my grandmother gave it to me, and I couldn’t put it down.
I am a highly sporadic reader, which probably stems from the way my family reads; like a locust swarm, if unchecked we will destroy our own food supply, sleeplessly consuming until there is nothing left to consume.
Therefore, I try to make it worth my time before I fall into that mess.
Your turn!

My name is Dave. I’m a thirtysomething sportswriter (OK, OK, I’m going to be 40 in six weeks, but let me pretend) who is blissfully happily married and who has the best 14-year-old daughter on the planet.
What do I write about? Everything. A lot of my posts are about sports, but they aren’t deep, analytical breakdowns of the latest NFL defensive fad. I write about personalities and amusing moments and lists of silly names.
I also write about politics, and post pictures, and stories about my family, and leather-chicken fiction, and … well, anything else that springs to mind.
I’m very good at making people laugh, and I’m good at making people think, and those are the two things I look for in friends.
And my favorite book? Sadly, it is probably some 800-page tome of sports statistics, but I’ll go with “Night Watch” by Terry Pratchett.
OK, and now, for Scott, my favorite music. The finest piece of music ever written is Rhapsody In Blue … unless it is Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Or the Ninth. Or Ein Klein Nachtmusik. The best song ever written is “If James Taylor Were On Fire”, by Paul and Storm.
What is, exactly, leather-chicken fiction? Or is that football fiction?

It used to actually be an “oral” tradition – I used to tell them as improv stories on an IRC channel – but some people didn’t like them and I ended up leaving the channel anyway.
http://davehogg.livejournal.com/938460.html isn’t technically a leather-chicken story, but it is the same style of writing.
(Crossposting to a few journals that have mentioned the friending frenzy)
Hi! I’m Moira, a thirtywhatever chicklet currently dwelling in the span between Chicago and Milwaukee (Kenosha, WI), but originally from the north ‘burbs of Detroit.
What do I write about? Randomness. A good number of my posts are the everyday adventure prattle of my life with my two long term partners. I write about my art and cooking and such. Occasionally I’ll post about gender, politics, and identity…but more frequently, my entries are about the awesome boots I found at Goodwill or my tourist trap fetish.
Favorite book? Likely American Gods by Neil Gaiman. (I am convinced that The House on The Rock is a portal).
Favorite Music? I’m pretty eclectic in my tastes. I can say that Elvis Costello and Elvis Presley are definitely on my life soundtrack.
Favorite Movie? Again, I have a wide range of what I like. My DVD collection is heavy with b-movies, though.
hey I added you as a friend! I also noticed that we went to the same high school! I graduated in 91.
nice to meet you.
*laughs* Actually, (I think) we’ve met! Daphne introduced us at Bead and Button in Milwaukee last summer.
oh that’s awesome! small world, eh? I remember meeting a few of her friends, but the show is awfully crazy for me. Will you be there again this year? Do you live in that area? I will be there again, same booth and everything.
Well…I can forgive you for not remembering me. We were trapped in an exhibit hall during a huge thunderstorm/passing of tornados, so we were all a mite distracted. *grins*
Yes, I do live in the area and have plans to attend the show this year. While I’m certain that we’ll talk via el jay before then, I’ll look for you at the show.
I like new friends. whee!
My name is Melanie and I work in clay and make jewelry for a living under the business name Earthenwood Studio. I post on LJ almost everyday, almost always with a picture of something new that I have made. My LJ is pretty much about my crafty life, and the struggles and joys of running a business in the arts. Sometimes I write beading tutorials, or about things that inspire me. I hope to inspire others on occasion.
Lets see, as for music I like lyrically driven music. Music that tells a story in words. A good deal of 80’s stuff. XTC and Elvis Costello are two of my favorites. I am also enjoying Keane, the Killers, Sam Roberts, Alanis Morrisette, the Beautiful South and the Fray lately. I have been on a serious Annie Lennox kick lately. I really enjoy Pandora radio so i can hear a bunch of my favorites all jumbled up.
Books. Ugh, my (not so) secret shame. I have not been able to find time for reading regularly since college. I do have a bunch of art books, which I love to look through and read bits and pieces, focusing in on one painting or two at a time. I love reading about art history, specifically Surrealism and female Surrealists, and Craft history and Asian art. I would say my favorite book is the Unknown Craftsman, by Soetsu Yanagi, which is about the Japanese ideal of raw beauty in simple, handcrafted utilitarian objects.
I’m Carrie, and everyone should probably be my friend. I’m 28, but I just got carded for an R-rated movie last Friday. Not to pretend that’s not a little flattering in a sick way, but it’s mostly just a great big “you’re immature and we can all see it from behind bullet-proof glass” right in my face. I did, however, know all that way before last Friday.
My poor journal has been experiencing a drought lately, but two things: 1) I’m getting on that any day now, and 2) Even if I don’t, it means that if we’re friends I certainly won’t be clogging up your friends list with entry after interminable entry. Everyone wins!
Often I write about my wacky life wherein I make horrible decision after horrible decision; sometimes I just feel compelled to share my new media discovery with everyone.
Now, judge away!
Music: I’m drawn to virtuosity, lush orchestration, evocative lyrics, rhythmic strength, and wit in my music. I take pleasure in a lot of different genres, including synth-pop, indie rock, and hip hop.
Books: Right now I’m reading two sociology books, a novel by Stephen Fry, and starting to reread the Dune Chronicles. Sandman is my favorite comic book series, and my favorite children’s book of all time is The Animal Garden by Ogden Nash.
I think brevity is overrated.
I’m Anne, and I’ve really enjoyed meeting most everyone I’ve met through sken, which probably accounts for some huge portion of my flist, really… so if I haven’t met you yet, “Hi!”
I’m never sure how to introduce myself; I’m a pretty eclectic person.
I was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which at the time was a bit of a hippy liberal enclave with more of an international community than many/most Americans get to grow up in. We had more used bookstores per capita than any other city in the country. Sigh. Those were the days.
I speak some spanish, and some sign language, and in both cases want to know more. I’m also hoping to learn Chinese. I know how to write Chinese Caligraphy, I just don’t know how to read what I wrote. :P
I have a degree in History from Grinnell College, where I also learned how to juggle, how to design theater sets and props, more on singing and modern dance, a fair bit of physics, some computer programming, and a lot of random computer stuff including how to talk to idiot users without biting their heads off and how to design web pages (back in the late 90s).
I took time off after college to travel and have been to most of the states in the United States, and also to Canada, Mexico, Spain, and Russia. my website has more about that.
Later I got a master’s degree in Systems Design Engineering. At the same time I helped run a student theater group, sang in the choir, and studied how to be a smof, which mostly involves running sf conventions and producing websites and desktop publications (fanzines, convention pubs, etc), and talking a lot in person, on email lists, and in other online conversations, sharing knowledge and ideas. I have since chaired a convention three times, been on staff of a hugo award-winning fanzine (Emerald City), become part of the stable of freelancers who do work for Subterranean Press, and currently maintain a couple wikis in the genre. Professionally I am a Human Factors Engineer/Staff Scientist at Klein Associates.
In my spare time I dance, read, and enjoy biking, taking care of my garden, and hanging out with friends and family, including my fiance,.
