Tax software

For the past three years or so, I’ve been all up ons my taxes, getting them done right away. Sometimes, that was ’cause Lucy did mine for me. ;)

Anyway, I’m not sure if I want to do mine with the software I’ve been using, TaxCut Pro, or something else (maybe a cheaper web based thing? Don’t know).

I’ve got one W2 and nothing unusual to declare. What say you? What did you (or will you) do your taxes with?

  1. I used turbotax on the web, but it was free for me as i’m a poor student. it worked very nicely.

  2. I use TaxAct. I haven’t had any problems since I started using it 5 years ago and at last comparison my tax return numbers matched that of the Major players in the market.

    • I use TaxAct as well. Federal returns are free, and states run 10-15 bucks each.

I had my taxes done in about a half hour with the simplest return possible, save having three separate W-2s to enter.

  3. I’ve used TaxSlayer for the past 6 years… Its free, and only $10 to efile. They check you before they send it off, and its super easy to use. Its all online based:)

  4. I just do it the old pen and paper way. If all you’ve got is a normal deal, why bother with the electronic version?

  5. I’ve used TurboTax online for several years now and since I have State Farm insurance I get it for free. You should look at the IRS website though (if that link is wonky, it’s just a section called Free File on irs.gov), as there are several big name companies (TurboTax, H&R Block, etc.) that will let you file a 1040EZ free through them depending on income level.

I’ve used TurboTax online for a long time and always have been happy with it. I actually enjoy doing my taxes, which is weird, I know. I signed up for TaxCut too because I’ve heard lots of positive things about it but I haven’t used it yet to vouch for it.

    • I ended up going back to TaxCut, primarily because I couldn’t locate my AGI for last year and I knew they had it locked within their vault.

Now that I’m at the end and I’ve got my AGI for this year and last year, I’m emailing it to myself along with the PDF of my taxes so I can easily search for them next year.

  6. I have used both TaxAct and Turbotax; both were easy as pie, but but they do these annoying pop ups every few screens, trying to get you to buy their other services and such. If you don’t get easily irritated by this, though, then I recommend one of these two sites.

  7. We’ve gone to the same little tax company by us for the last 7 years. Thankfully they’re very good and we lucked out finding them.

  8. I believe IRS.gov has tax software for free if your taxes are simple enough.

We used TurboTax, which has worked well for us.

  9. I use pencil and paper, too. Just one W2, no strange city taxes or nuthin’. It suits me.

  10. I used my Mother in Law. She works for HR block.

Things to remember (if you didn’t remember them)
1-there is a tax credit for renting.
2-there is a refund on the interest paid for student loans.

  11. I used TaxAct, which is online and free (minus a small fee for the State filing). It was pretty nice — painless and clear, with good Help features and only a bit of annoying advertising. I’d recommend it, if you’re so inclined.
