*headdesk*

It came from my hotmail account. I haven’t used hotmail in years (I use gmail now) – I only use it for IM, really. Which makes that old address book rather … awkward, when it comes to sending out apology emails.

Fortunately it seems many of the people I haven’t been in touch with for years seem to have moved on from their old email addresses as well, as my “oops, please disregard” email has largely bounced.

Hasn’t bounced from the exes, though. *sigh* That would be too easy.

I changed my hotmail password to something unique and promptly deleted the entire address book, so that should be that.

If you were one of the folks who got the email – I guess I’ve known you for awhile! I hope your computer is incapable of opening RAR files. :D

(In a really strange note, it appears some people were getting emails to addresses they used -before- we knew each other … could this be an IM-based attack, where the email addresses are populated by a vulnerable instant message list?)

  1. I think it was ICQ or IQC back in the mid 90 that I first met you online…..

    • Srsly? That is fascinating – I couldn’t recall. I just remember what a weird coincidence it was that we knew some of the same people. :)

      • Yep. Chuck showed this “online chat” stuff back when I was at the AI Lab. Then dragged you into a chat and low and behold, I think I’ve only talked to you face to face 3-4 times. :) in the last 13 years.

  2. My friend’s Hotmail got hacked recently, and started spamming everyone in his address book.

There are ways to glean/recover passwords for accounts that are dormant for more than 30 days. Additionally, it’s a good idea to never take and post results to those quizzes that generate your porn name or Star Wars name, as they often incorporate information that’s used in secret questions for password retrieval, like ‘street you grew up on,’ or ‘mother’s maiden name,’ etc.

  3. My old Yahoo account got it earlier in the summer. I just shut it down completely.
