From your favorite pizza afficianado
Congrats should go out to Dominos for the most honest assessment of their crappy product in a commercial.
While I haven’t tried their new pizza, I have to say that both the criticisms they’re addressing AND the flavor notes they mention when talking about their new pizza hit precisely how I have felt about pizza and what I feel it should be. Frankly, there were times I’d be eating dominos and look up at my pizza clock, wondering if it tasted better.
I think I’m willing to give it a shot again.
Check out their hugely self-deprecating video: http://www.pizzaturnaround.com/
I guess they took two years to recreate their product from scratch. With that kind of all-hands full-stop effort, you can’t just make another ad that says “Now new and improved!” – it’ll get buried. This is what I would call original marketing – congrats should also go to their ad agency.
EDIT: Hahaha, “Is that pizza, or did an angel just give birth in my mouth?”
Does Tom Monahan still own a lot of their stock? Because I’m not doing anything that puts money in the pocket of that Christo-Fascist* nutball.
(* Yes, I’m aware that technically that’s redundant as Fascist regimes classically have significant Church involvement, but he goes beyond that)
According to Wiki:
In 1998, after 38 years of ownership, Domino’s Pizza founder Tom Monaghan announced his retirement and sold 93 percent of the company to Bain Capital, Inc. for about $1 billion and ceased being involved in day-to-day operations of the company.[8] A year later, the company named David A. Brandon Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
Okay, so he still owns 7% of it. (You may not remember this, but that asshole single-handedly funded the campaign to end tax-funded abortions for poor people in Michigan. That’s when I vowed to never send him a single cent, ever again.)
I don’t recall that, but I believe you. No offense to those who live there, but sometimes scraping off the top layer of the western side of the state and starting over doesn’t sound like such a bad idea.
I haven’t had Dominos in years. I don’t remember it as being truly abysmal, but it certainly wasn’t the best. Pizza Hut was definitely better.
I agree about the ad campaign. It’s brilliant.
