The why-is-its of a video editor, photographer, designer, convention-runner.
In my experimental pursuit of various MMO games (just a tour, mind you, I am not looking for a new monkey), I’ve neglected Lord of the Rings, and since it is free I thought I’d give it a try.
If you play, do you have a specific server you play on?
I’m not currently playing, but I’ve played on Landroval. It’s theoretically an RP server, so it seems to have more than its fair share of helpful people. I never saw much impoliteness even when n00bs were asking very basic questions in the regional chat channels, which is better than pretty much any other MMO I’ve played.
If you decide to stick with it and join a kinship (guild equivalent), let me know and I’ll give you a recommendation.
Also, let me know if you have any questions about gameplay! I’m a major altoholic so I never really got any characters higher than low 30s, but that also means that I’ve leveled everything but a Loremaster and a Champion. And I played at least the first 10 levels with both of those before deciding they weren’t for me.
It is indeed free. And I did join Landroval, and it was interesting enough to keep me up late last night – playing a Loremaster. I think I’ll keep investigating.
The Deeds system is really very deep, providing you with everything from enhancements to titles for doing less-than-obvious things – you’ll use a combination of spells for the first time, or kill a certain creature, and a new deed will be discovered that could be social, or racial, or whathaveyou.
Oh, and for accomplishing those deeds, you actually get coins you can spend in the store – so you don’t HAVE to purchase the game in order to pick up something in the store.
The professions system is equally interesting, though sometimes the interdependence is annoying, when you don’t know anyone else playing.
The crafting system is a large part of why I’m at the character cap, so I can cover everything for all my characters. Crafting is one of the things that draws me to an MMO, so I really got into the LoTRO system.
One of the really nice things about LoTRO (for me, as a crafting nut) is that the quality of gear seems to go storebought < random drops < crafted gear < boss drops. Some of the super-special crafted gear that requires boss-dropped components is even better than boss drops at its level.
Since it’s free now, I’d be happy to reinstall and use my crafting network to make you some spiffy low-level gear if you’d like.
That’s awfully cool of you – I’m finally into my first city, I don’t even have most of my gear slots full, haha. :) I went with “explorer”, which doesn’t seem to require as much trading.
Okay, I’m officially reinstalled and ready to go as a Freemium user. (You get extra stuff for formerly having been a paying customer even if you come back as free-to-play). Let me know your character name and level and I’ll see what I can throw together for you!
Since I work a really wacky afternoons-and-nights schedule, I probably couldn’t meet up with you in game until Sunday, but I can at least make you a new stick and mail it to you. If you have any “Ashy Drops of Resin” from harvesting wood, please send a few to Sigfast, they’re the crit-boosting item for Woodcrafting and I only have one in th bank right now.

The only one I’ve tried other than WoW thats a “Current” new game.. kinda. Was D&D Online. And that was the open Beta a couple years ago. Wasn’t thrilled with it then. It wasn’t BAD, but it def. wasn’t D&D to me w/ the new Ebberon setting.
I’ve played a bit of D&DO recently (it’s free now, too), and it reminds me of D&D in the crazy maths and all, I didn’t really think about the environment and whether it connects with old-school D&D, though.
The intro for it was nonexistent, really – Final Fantasy XIV’s open beta is also horrible like that, without any real introduction. Champions Online, that’s about the only one I’ve tried so far that has a reasonable introduction experience.

I do not play LOTR, but I want to caution you against Final Fantasy 14. I cringe to even begin to speak against a FF game, because I love them so, but I was on the beta for it, and it sucks a big one. LOL
I was on the beta as well. Fortunately I had a friend who started in the alpha, so she taught me where to look to figure out the professions, fighting, etc. It’s an incredibly beautiful looking game, but the learning curve is linux-tastic.
Interesting for WoW people, the city I started in looks a lot like ironforge, but it felt dead. No one really wandered anywhere, nothing really happened, and there was very little to do.
