Curious about this open source project for 3d earth

I’m curious to see how it compares to google earth. I’ll have to check
it out later.

  1. as a productive educational tool I think that World Wind is a better tool. Its much smother and has better eleveation data, and really its supported by THE mapping people. GE is nice, but it is lacking in many areas. The big thing the GE really has going for it is how open it is to users to create content and even that is limited.

Im still waiting a few mor weeks for ArcGIS Explorer to come out and we will then see how GE and WW stand up.

    • Can you tell me about it? Who is creating it, is it open/free/etc, what’s it got (theoretically) over the others?

      • ArcGIS Explorer is put out by ESRI. For most GIS mapping they are the one and only choice. The Microsoft of the mapping world really. They had a 3d global modeling tool out several years ago and were set to be the only ones to have anything like it untill Google bought up Keyhole and made it something usefull ie Google Earth.

ArcGIS Explorer will be (I think) a bit of a mix between both GE and WW. The ability to publish global mapsets to replace the base data (which you cant really do for GE) as well as make use of GE KML data types along with real mapping shapefiles (which neither GE or WW support. wich for me is huge as it is pretty much all I use. It will also support 3d buildings, possably better than GE and should support 3d animations ( at least the 3D modeling programs they had in the past would) but we have heard not nearly as much as I would like about it yet. should be out within the month.

  2. interesting, but unfortunately it crashes at launch for me.
