Games of all kinds

I had a nice mid-week surprise visit with the Lucy yesterday, which has me pleased but very tired. Our L-town hotel came with a king size bed, hot tub, free drinks, and a discount at the pub next door. And free (unused) wireless. Shwing, right? The hot tub was missing the lever to keep the stopper down, which presented its own hilarity as we experimented with how much water it took to keep it suctioned.

My friend entelein posted about how she misses sharing a videogame with a partner, either by watching or being watched, and it reminded me of how Rachel would watch me play sometimes, as rapt as I was at the controls. Sometimes I watch Lucy play warcraft for awhile, but IMHO that game is all grind, all the time. It’s taken the critical flaw of your classic RPG and elevated it to an art form. Don’t get me wrong – it IS an art form, and from what I’ve gathered, it makes those things that were once irritating into something rather fun. That said, even Bookworm Adventures has a story arc, and B.A.’s just a word puzzle.

When I’m swimming in the phat cash, I’d like to play the Kingdom Hearts series of games. A number of gamers who seems to have compatible interests to mine have really jumped up and down about them. Step one in -that- process, of course, is to pick up a Sony system. ;)

I want to see a system or game designed to play cooperative on two TV’s. Especially when it comes to games like Halo and GoW (which I haven’t played). I mean, I hate playing a co-op mission and having to waste my screen space, and I don’t like being able to see everything my partner is doing – when Ben and I play Halo and communicate vocally instead of trying to watch each other’s screens, we play much better.

On my way in to work, my shuffle played Through the Never, and I laughed aloud. You see, my wake-up alarm on my cell is the intro to Zelda (LftP), but the song that REALLY slams the SNES game into my frontal lobe is Through the Never, and anything else from the black album of Metallica. You see, those days I would put a tape on repeat and let it go while I played for 4, 5, 8 hours on my SNES.

Rocket Queen (GnR) reminds me of one of the Phantasy Star games (III, maybe) in the same way.

EDIT: This is the best idea ever. In one ear I have headphones playing my shuffle, quietly, and the other ear’s plugged into the computer so I can hear vid I’m working on. Life is good!

  1. Halo does let you do co-op on two tvs. Of course, you also need two xboxen and two copies of the game. GoW has online co-op on two TVs, but I don’t think you can just hook two systems up next to each other.

  2. I tried Kingdom Hearts, but for some reason, it didn’t suck me in like the PS games or the FF games. Or like Xenosaga, which pulled me in and held me under for months, just like Skies of Arcadia (which is incredible, I loved being a sky pirate and flying around the world in 3D).

I remember playing lots of RPGs with repetitive music while building up levels years ago, and I’d turn the volume down and play something else. FFI always reminds me of the Scorpions now, for that reason, and Sword of Vermilion reminds me of Matthew Sweet. heh.

Now, the music is better, usually, and many of the newer games are better balanced, so you don’t seem to have to do so much running around…I remember playing Chrono Trigger, and never turning on my music once, because it was enjoyable and it didn’t get on my nerves.

  3. GoW was totally awesome when we played it LAN style at Epic. I loved being able to watch the other playing on their screens after I died.

I watch CJ play Halo2 and such all the time. Grew up taking turns on the NES which necessitates watching someone else play. “Go up… no UP!!”

Man… just watching someone else play is a fab form of entertainment.
