I wonder if the CSL will ever realize that I put my headphones in precisely when she starts getting too loud on her very, very personal calls.
See, like today I know that she’s asking one of her children (I hope it’s one of her children) if they -really- want to move in with her again because she’ll of course make them stop listening to certain music and watch certain movies and make her go to church etc. I could not plug my ears before hearing that the child’s life could be worse, she could be beaten bloody, “she knows from experience”… I’m like WHY do I know these things?
Beh.

…and you’re just too nice to tell her that, “You know, my mom said that to me, and I think I turned out well.”
and let her take that as she will.
Perhaps that’s it. Or maybe I know that the minute I get involved, instead of feeling embarrassed she will engage me in discussion about it. Noooooooo…
auh….and you’re get in trouble for playing German Industrial at a volume she could hear wouldn’t you???
But, on a serious side, have you mentioned at reviews or meeting with your boss that having such personal information about a co-worker makes you uncomforatable and lessen your abliity to be an effective and contributing member of the company?
Heh. :) My headphones are also earplugs, and I can fairly well blast them without other people hearing.
As for the latter… I may be annoyed by her, and I may be irritated with the personal information, but A) I’ve got to work next to her and I don’t want evil eye looks, which would be more distracting, and B) annoying isn’t the same as counterproductive.
We’re both trying to make a living doing something … less than optimal. As long as she isn’t directly affecting my job, I’d rather not muck in her life. Instead, I’d rather bitch about it here. :D
Fair ‘Nuff.

Who’s her supervisor? I recommend telling that person that you’re not interested in the intimate details of her family life. That worked for me, years and years ago. She still was on the phone constantly with her various siblings, but I didn’t have to know about it, because she learned to speak more quietly.
See my comment above. :)
