so we have an ad that says “use the internet for more than just leads. and porno.” My question is … who in the modern day says “porno” in that context instead of “porn”?

it’s clearly A porno” and SOME porn”

  1. huh….porno to me means movie.
porn, well, to paraphase, I know it when see it.

  2. You’d *obviously* need a degree in advertising to even begin to understand the subtleties of that statement.. It would be awesome if they planted a porno image that flicked up for a instant. kinda like splicing in a frame in a movie, a la Fight Club.

  3. EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!! *scoff*

    :-p

  4. Wow, good catch.

  5. It’s all just porn.

“Porno” as an abbrieviated count noun for pornographic items is, I think, a little archaic, and I can only grammatically use it to refer to recorded moving visuals.

All the rest is “porn” (or perhaps “pr0n”, in written nerd registers) and you’re right, it’s a mass noun.

The real question is, why isn’t there a counter for “porn”? I.e., “a stick of butter”, “a grain of sand”, but… “a _______ of porn”? There isn’t anything appropriate. And I can say “a porn mag” but not “a porn movie” or “a porn book”.

    • Counters for porn

Sure there’s counters for porn. It just depends on the media.

      “7 gigs of porn.”

      “4 CD spindles of porn.”

“7 weeks worth of KY of porn.”

Ok, so I made that last one up.

Hmm, you’ve a point there. Porn can be measured with quantity measures, but it can’t be separated out into single items.

I… I wonder why that is.

        • Re: Counters for porn

You -can- say “… that one porn” and it does refer to an individual porn, rather than “that one grain” which refers to the entire group.

… actually, that may be incorrect, too – each individual porn is mass-produced, so when you say “have you seen that one porn?” you’re effectively referring to a set.

          I think.

Hi Erika :) I agree on all counts. funny that “a porn book” is right out but “a book of porn” sounds just fine.

Hehe, perhaps we should see if we can convince people to use “scoche” as the counter. “I picked up three scoches of porn at The Lion’s Den today …”
