Geeking about IM stuff (and gratuitous icon usage)

MSN has always been kind of a bitch with GAIM (my multi-chat client of choice), particularly v1.5, which crashes every time I try to log on. In the past month or so, ICQ has also been kind of a bitch, to (*snap snap* look, country? look at me. you’re being kind of a bitch.), with a massive amount of iSpam coming my way.

I was thinking about dropping both, even though I’ve always been sort of geekishly proud of my low-six-digit ICQ #.

However, I hear a number of new things coming down the pipe. First, GAIM is now Pidgin. Same stuff, same software versioning, but now legally settled with AOL, who was being a jerk-and-a-half. This settlement also means a new non-beta version of GAIMPidgin within a week or two. Yay! So I’ll keep MSN and ICQ for a little longer, and hope the new code will make everything A-OK. I’m generally really pleased with this bit of open-source software.

Oh, by the way, mac users? I never realized it, but Adium is based off of the GAIM libraries. Pretty cool!

How many of you used PowWow back in the d-a-y?

  1. Wooo! 655811 here. Though I have not logged on in years. I think I still know my password.

I juggle so many chat applications, I might just have to switch to pidgin. I also hate the new AIM interface changes. How is GAIM on memory?

    • 543118 :)

GAIM is currently using 18 megs of memory on this laptop, where I’ve got all IM’s but MSN running, and 4 gigs of RAM for it to spread out in ;)

    • I should note that the memory usage I just stated is for 1.5 . 2.0 comes out in a week or two.

  2. You don’t like Trillian?

    • I used to use Trillian Pro. It was a pain in the ass, because I’m a rich american swine who doesn’t want to pay for my software, but wants all the options. Okay, not rich. Anyway, upgrading was a pain in the ass, and there were a few elements of it I didn’t like. I can’t remember what they were because it has been years since I switched.

GAIM is open source, frequently updated, and rather small in size. Also, legally free, and not because I’ve got some partly crippled version.

  3. MSN and ICQ have been having logon errors for me lately as well using Adium (Adium, by the way is such an amazing app. The fact that I have been on IM stuff lately is entirely because of that program. I was “using” iChat for so long, but when Adium hit 1.0 and the 1 billionth person said how great it was I thought I’d try it. It has everything I liked about iChat (except video – which I never use anyway) and much more and since it uses gtalk, people I know are actually showing up.)

  4. I like Adium. :) It’s my mac client of choice.
