I read the oreilly_radar, and in his latest post he said, “Facebook is an empty wasteland for people who have not climbed over the hump of use. For those who have active community within it, it is this generation’s Lotus 1-2-3.”

I find that so interesting because Lucy and her vet school friends use it all the time, and though I made one so’s I could look at group photos, well… I pretty much never use it. In fact, it seemed pretty bland and boring to me, and even restrictive.

I think he’s probably right, though – I don’t have any particularly active communities there, and so it is that empty wasteland for me.

However, one thing I did note: being on the Ren Fest group had me giving others the lowdown that the site was updated to reflect this year’s info long before anyone else knew. So, even now I see the kernel of usability.

  2. Personnally I find facebook does wonders for events, if not keeping in touch with people without the mask of online aliases and such. It’s ‘real’. But yes, I find the group feature to be pretty restrictive (and to a degree, events) without sufficiently convenient notifications of updates and such. That’s pretty weak. But for photos/video/events/communication – great!

    Perhaps I find it better also because the weight of membership right now is in the Toronto network… lots of people in my area are on it, so lots of connections. *shrug*

    If adoption is weaker in certain areas, I could see it definitely be ‘boring’ in places.

  3. I only got facebook because my crazy linguist friends all have them and don’t have LJs. I’m not terribly thrilled with it. But it functions, I guess.

  4. i have facebook, classmates, and a couple of others, just b/c some other people have them. but i don’t keep up on them; in fact, i generally forget i have them, til someone contacts me via those sites.

    i’m purely myspace and lj, baybee! :D
