Two things

I got a lovely little note in my last bill from Verizon saying they’re making changes to their New Every Two program. Now you have to spent over 80 dollars a month to get the 100 dollars off – you get only 50 if you spend between 40 and 80, and nothing if you spend less than that. Thanks a lot, Verizon, it’s good to see a little consistency in your grand plan of “Offer a good discount, then gradually reduce the number in a way that’s not advertised”.

I find it fascinating that the fee for text messages out of your plan is now 20 cents. Fortunately, I have the unlimited plan, because I barely talk to anyone outside of Verizon these days, it’s mostly just sms.

In other news, I’m really enamored with the smartkey lock (can’t be bumped due to a non-tumbler system). Specifically that you can program all your locks to use the same key, and change that key as often as you want. It makes me wish I had a door of my own to lock. :D

Bonus thought: I wonder if the sharp rise in the cost of corn will reverse the U.S. trend of using High Fructose Corn Syrup. The reason we use it here over regular sugar is that it is cheaper. If that ceases to be, I imagine the market will change.

  1. Verizon pissed me off when I found out that sub-phones on a family plan get a shitty, shitty discount after 2 years, and not nearly the same discounts as the main phone. could have gotten an EnV for free when he renewed/got a new phone, but opted for something else.

When my two years ran out, I had the option of like, two phones for free, and the phone I ended up with (which was not significantly better or nicer than the phone I had, other than not having a dying battery) still cost me $30.

I will probably just up and buy an enV (because I really, really want one) if I land a new job, but it was really annoying to see that despite the fact that we give them a great deal of money every month for the three phones on our family plan, all phones are not created equal.

And now it sounds like the discount is going to get crappy for everyone, which sucks even more.

  3. I was just wondering the same thing about HFCS and sugar. Tariffs and farm subsidies make sugar in the USA and Canada about twice as expensive as in the rest of the world. Some candy companies (like LifeSavers) have moved candy production outside the USA simply because it’s far cheaper to make the candy outside the USA with cheap sugar, then import the candy without tariffs. Even though the corn used in ethanol is different from edible/food corn, the same farmers switch to growing ethanol-grade corn, creating a shortage of corn for food and HFCS. At some point, sugar may again become an attractive alternative. Moreover, perhaps this will create pressure to lift the sugar tariffs, lest the price of soft drinks and of other sugary foodstuffs skyrockets.

  11. In that case I probably missed my window. I’ve been eilligible for the New Every Two for about the last year and a half…I probably can’t get as good a deal as a few months ago. Which is fine because my cell phone isnt’ acting up anymore…but still.

    • I don’t know what the date was for the notice – you may be able to still get it until the end of the month.

      • Possibly…I’ll check my recent bill. But at this point, I already have enough expenses this month. My cell isn’t broken, therefore I’m not going to get a new one.

  13. That’s not the only reason it is used. Because it is more concentrated and a liquid there are all kinds of advantages to integrating it into a processed food workflow (this is why Splenda is not used more in processed foods, despite high esteem by the diet food eating public – no liquid version for sale).

Anyway, no probably not. Chances are it will just displace growing actual, you know, Food.

  17. Oh I’m already pissed with Verizon, because they are, after all, Verizon. That’s just a pissy thing to do to us long-time customers.

  19. And, because I always love the low tech answer: Who needs fancy reprogrammable lock whey you can just make the laws of viscosity work for you:
