Why Rock Band for Wii will be somewhat lame
“So it appears you’re all pretty upset about the Wii version of Rock Band. And hey, we can’t blame you — we feel the same way! The reduced feature-set of the Wii game hurts, and like many of you, the lack of online play and DLC [downloadable content] may well force us to purchase another version.
But according to developer Harmonix, none of this is really its fault — nope, it’s the Wii that’s to blame, specifically the lack of a Wii hard drive. Quoth Harmonix design director Rob Kay: “[…] We need a hard drive. That’s what we want. The whole problem is there’s nowhere to store it. If the platform could do it, we’d jump on it.”
Which is a valid point, actually. With single songs on other versions weighing in at around 30 – 45MB, the Wii’s 512MB of internal storage would fill up quickly. We remain justifiably cross, however, at the missing online play.”
This is a good point. Unless they were to provide a 4GB SD card with every copy or Rock Band, and load their songs onto that, it just wouldn’t work.
Hey, actually, that’s a pretty swinging idea. They could even make more money off it – sell a 40 dollar upgrade, hm? It’d have to come with scores of free music already on it, naturally.

I guess the PS2 version of rock band really sucks for the same reason. You can’t customize your peeps which is half the fun on my 360 one.
Yeah, the Wii version is a PS2 port. It’s the biggest problem I have with the Wii, actually – it’s a port factory, people just dump the simplest versions of their games onto it and rake in the money.
Yes, it’s just the PS2 port. So, I lay the blame evenly across Nintendo/Harmonix.
Nintendo: No hard drive = massive fail
Harmonix: Heard in the Harmonix board, “Holy Shit! If we port the PS2 version to Wii…we’ll spend $10 in porting it, and make more money than God!!!!!! LET’S DO IT.”
It’s both their fault, but Harmonix is blaming Nintendo for their easy cash-in.
I pretty much agree with that, yeah.

Do you think they should make the game cheaper or not create it at all? Seems like if they snubbed the wii entirely, then people would be pissed at them for not making the game in the first place.
I understand what you’re saying, and you are correct, there would be major upheaval, and for the millions of uninformed Wii owners/consumers that buy shovelware like “Carnival Games,” this will be enough, but as an informed consumer, I don’t want to be teased like this. It would be like purchasing a new car being told it’s exactly like my buddy’s, except I can’t use the expressways or leave the state. WTF?!? It’s a car, it can drive on the expressways, but the manufacturer just didn’t want to put the time and money into figuring out how to do it. So, they go for the quick cash-in and look like the good guys when they blame the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles for not creating forms for them to fill out.
I say you wait and do it properly. I love playing Rock Band, but I will not buy it on Wii. This is a business move, pure and simple, and has nothing to do with giving consumers what they want, b/c if they did, it would have at the very least, DLC.

Someone online said “Nintendo could make an add on hard drive! They could paint it white, and charge twice the price, and make it incompatible with everything else…but Apple might sue.”
As much as I love Rock Band, this may be the 2nd reason I don’t buy it. (First being I really, really cant justify that kind of cash on a game.) I don’t want some crippled version of the game I know and love.
I kinda agree. It makes me weep to say it.

I used my bonus money to get a 360 for my son and me. We got Rock Band for us too. I have to say I like it over GH. I love the feel of the guitar and now that they seem to have them fixed, I would recommend the game to anyone.
I actually had to stop playing the GH guitars because they were killing my hand. They are so thick compared to RB’s.
I prefer the RB guitar, though I seem to be in the minority amongst my friends on this side of the state.

I love RB. Like I said, I just can’t justify the expense. We only have a Wii because my daughter’s dad bought it for her two christmases ago.

Totally agree. While I had fun playing Rock Band for the first time last weekend, I can’t justify shelling out what? Nearly $500 to get an XBox 360 and a real version of Rock Band? Ugh.
