…..ok….
I have to ask.
What “shape” is the male body in?
If it is Andre the Giant shape….not appealing to me. John Merrick can keep his clothes on too
Is it Danial Craig as James Bond….very pleasing.
Is it …Arnold at the height of his body building phase…iffy.
Is it just a run of the mill average guy shape… shrug, it could be either or depending on the mood I’m in.
I guess in truth, I find a guy (or girl for that matter) that is in good shape more (as you phrased it) aesthetically pleasing than a person that is out of shape.
It’s a fair question, and the answer has to vary for the person. Given a reasonable set of limitations that apply equally to the male and female body.
Though I didn’t give a range of answers (like 1-5), still, one might reconsider their answers if, for instance, they find the female body aesthetically pleasing no matter WHAT shape it was in, but only found male bodies attractive if they were Daniel Craig.

I have several issues with that review. I’ve seen the movie, and in general, I don’t enjoy these type of movies. I really enjoyed this one though. I was laughing a lot.
Okay, so, first of all, yes, people in the theater were laughing when he was naked. But it wasn’t because the male form is something that makes us laughably nervous. It was because the entire set up and situation was laughable. At least this is why I was laughing at that portion. It wasn’t “OMG PENIS UGLY MUST LAUGH OUT OF NERVOUSNESS!” The character was being a doofus. The nakedness was a part of the humor. I would like to think had the genders been reversed, and the female was naked and being broken up with, and lamenting in the way the character in this movie was, it would have elicited the same chortles and giggles.
Of course, all this depends on the maturity level of the viewer, and their comfort level with nakedness in general. But I really did not get the impression the scene was shot to convey some sort of prejudice against male nakedness. Like, that the male form, naked, is so ugly it’s laughable. It was all about context.
Second – what the hell is so bad about showing a “real” guy naked in all these films? The review mentions “a parade of doughy lumps”, um, hello? So only really cut, built, non-doughy guys should be naked in movies? I find this just as appalling as the entertainment industry only wanting tiny skinny girls with big boobs to be represented in films too. Real people, man or woman, do not look like that. Okay, well, sure, some of them do. When they have the time to focus on keeping themselves looking that way. But regular Joe or Jill who has a job and a family/friends/dog/cat/car problems, whatever, generally can’t afford the time or money to look like a supermodel. I love the fact these movies show dorky guys getting the girl. I personally am MUCH more attracted to dorky guys, ones who have more substance to them than the amount they can bench press or how many crunches they can do in five minutes. If he’s “fit” and in shape, is that even more attractive? Well. Yeah. But I’ve often found myself attracted to people who aren’t culturally “attractive” because they are amazing PEOPLE.
I’m not sure why but I really find it offensive that the reviewer is tagging the typical “not hot” stereotype to these guys as part of the reason their nakedness is somehow laughable or makes people uncomfortable. Or that it is showing disgust for their form. If there is any disgust going on it is in labeling them “doughy” and “unattractive to the opposite sex” because they don’t look the way society thinks people ought to look to be “hot”.
Lastly (sorry this is so long ;) ) – I have to admit I don’t, on an aesthetic level, really find male nakedness that pleasing. More to the “it doesn’t do anything for me one way or the other”. But that really only applies to nakedness of men I have no emotional relationship with. If I care about someone in a romantic way, or love them, or are attracted to them as a person, I find the nakedness much more pleasing. Because it’s personal. It has “other thing”, emotionally, attached to it. But to just look at some naked guy in a magazine or whatnot, would not really do anything for me, good or bad. Just thought I’d share that – it really wasn’t an answer you listed but since you’re looking for opinions, that is mine ;)
Actually, your vote is totally valid there, and your opinion is definitely of interest here. I was going for “all things possible being equal” in the poll. I am running under the assumption that most people who date men find the RIGHT male body appealing, in that circumstance, but that is different from finding the male physique attractive in general, its typical shapes and unique differences from the female body.
I quite agree with some of your critique here, in that it doesn’t have to be laughter out of fear, and I quite like that normal guys are allowed to be naked, and think that’s important for the whole “real people exist” thing. However, I also see the point that generally speaking the women are ‘hot’ even if the men are pudgy, and “getting the girl” is almost never about getting a girl with an amazing personality and an average body.
It definitely has to do with the maturity of the viewer, but this isn’t a movie targeted toward maturity, either.
However, I haven’t seen the movie, so I think your review of the perspective they shot it with means more than my theories, with just a review to go on. :D
The target audience being what it may be, most of the theater was filled with people my age, or older. There was only a handful of college aged kids there. It was predominantly “older” types.
And actually, the key scene in the movie where the guy sort of “gets” the girl, was REALLY dorky and totally had nothing to do with sex or whatnot. It was all on him being goofy and funny and attractive as a person. Subsequent “rope the girl in” actions all had to do with personality too, IMO.
But to have an educated debate on that you’d have to see the film ;)

I made the poll, totally boned the actual questions, and LJ would NOT let me delete the poll itself and insert a new poll into the post. So I copied it to a new post, and left this hear so the comments didn’t disappear.

You asked the same question twice at the end. I assume one is supposed to be “i’m female”.
oops! I just reposted it.

Also, what is up with this post having like, two separate threads of comments . . . weird!
I made the poll, totally boned the actual questions, and LJ would NOT let me delete the poll itself and insert a new poll into the post. So I copied it to a new post, and left this hear so the comments didn’t disappear.
Ooooohhhhhh ok.
Thanks for clearing that up. My brain is all mushy from ATTEMPTING to do work on finals. I was like “Hur um dur what the hell?!”
