Yeah, its nuts here now too. It went from $3.60 yesterday morning at 8AM to nearly $5 by last night. And there’s no regular or midgrade left anywhere, so you can do the math as to what premium costs.
Exactly – gas was at $3.50 around here…
People started to panic…it went up to 3.75
People started lining up at gas stations…prices were 3.75 to 4.10
Now people are being complete morons and in a full on state of illogical retarded chicken-little syndrome…and prices are NOW 3.90 to 4.60
AND THERE’S STILL NO SHORTAGE OF PETROL! It’s all just people being retards and the petrol industry taking advantage of stupidity and paranoia…because gouging an extra 1.10 per gallon probably seems like a fabulous idea right now,
Uh, “people?” I don’t know about you, but I didn’t see a flood of people at my local gas station AT ANY POINT this weekend. The OWNER of the gas station upped the price FOR HIS OWN REASONS.
I repeat, it was NOT a demand spike. It’s just easy to think of it that way. I presume the owner decided that it was either a convenient time to jack up the price or was possibly afraid of his own price hikes if Ike turned out to be big trouble (validly or not).
If I have reason to anticipate that gas prices will continue to increase, I will buy my gas when it is least expensive, and suggest others do so as well. We are not living in four-hour-line-shortageville like in the 70’s.
I’m sure that it’s all owners upping prices for selfish reasons…since there is not a shortage.
I HAVE seen lines at the pumps (stupid folk with paranoia).
Also…amusingly…
I strongly disagree with your “continuing increase” theory…because I saw about thirty pieces of evidence to the contrary on my way home.
Petrol prices on the east side out here…have already plummeted .30…IN A DAY (of course…the day that Ike was downgraded).
Maybe tomorrow it will look like what it was BEFORE the stupid hit town.
That’s possible. I paid 4.15 on my way home, though every gas station besides the one I stopped at was 4:19. That’s still 10 cents cheaper.
On the news, they said that 25% of the our refineries were closed, and while they didn’t expect much damage, it could take weeks to re-open them. I don’t know how that will play out.
No, this is the WORST time to stockpile; if you’re going to do so, wait until after the storm has passed. Prices are high right now on speculation that the Gulf refineries will be off-line, and will drop significantly as soon as those refineries go back on line.
Unless you’re really low in the tank, I’d suggest waiting a couple of days.
— Steve’s just glad he uses transit for commuting, these days.
I did not at all suggest one stockpiles. I said if one is low on gas, I would get it now (as in, this morning) rather than later (as in, this evening or tomorrow). It is clear that high prices that come so instantly after an “issue” are done by the individual gas companies and owners and not due to valid price increases, but that does not indicate whether prices will continue to soar in the short-term future.
Actually – THERE IS NO SHORTAGE (yet, but if people keep “stockpiling” there will be a shortage and people who “stockpiled” will be to blame…not to mention look like idiots once the prices plummet afterward and they’re still living off their overpriced hoarde)…they’re just gouging now on the assumption that there might be a shortage (allowing them to raise prices another couple dollars without repercussions) LATER as a result of the hype and maybe one or two (of the numerous) refineries having a little down time in a worst case scenario.
I have no intention of encouraging such disgusting tactics (the gouging). I’d really sooner take the bus.
Gas jumped $.15-$.20 at my local station too. There’s no reason for that to happen overnight in Boston. I think we get our gas out of a NJ port, anyway!

I plan on filling up all my spare gas cans and stashing away as much as possible.
No. BAD. this is why the price is going up and gas is running out. This is totally warantless and irrational behavior; do not encourage it.

Apparently you missed Gov. Granholm’s press conference urging all Michigan residents to not panic about the gasoline supply.
“We want to make clear that the storm has not affected the price of gasoline, nor should it affect the price of gasoline, in Michigan right now.”
“Please do not panic. There should not be a rush to gas stations.”

I did indeed miss the memo. I did say, “if you’re low”, and not “please fill up every available container.”
Heh, I may have a 30mpg mazda, but work is a 26 mile round trip, and that light comes on awfully frequently.
