Holy crap, I got a 360.

Guess who got it for me, along with Fallout 3?

I checked to see if my old ID, Sgt ATDT still existed, and it did! A surprising number of people (beekeepers, mostly) had me friended, still.

Meanwhile, I gave Lucy her gifts, including this lovely emerald necklace:

  1. So we’re the only ones without one?

Glad you two are enjoying yourselves :)

  2. Pretty. (So is the necklace)

  3. Wow, that’s a gorgeous necklace! Very happy for Lucy to have her own bling to wear to next year’s chocolate party. :)

  4. That is one gorgeous necklace; Lucy is a lucky girl.

  5. I was shocked this afternoon to find I must have dropped you from my Xbox Live Friends list or something; a quick invitation is on your way, should you wish to accept.

I get the feeling you’ll like Fallout 3; I know it obsessed me for pretty much a month, to the point I’m tempted to loan it out to prevent relapse. Fallout purists may squawk, but I think it’s a great addition to the series even if the ending is a bit limp.

    — Steve likes the look of that necklace too. You two are lucky to have each other.

    • Cool beans, no worries on that. :)

I’ve played a few hours tonight – I’ve had pretty bad luck with the persuasion so far, despite having high points in speech.

      • Fallout has a very “pen and paper” RPG feel to its behind-the-scenes stuff; skills tie in with your SPECIAL stats (in speech’s case, Charisma) to generate the odds for success. A high Speech skill but low Charisma would cut your odds, for instance.

Pretty much every skill-based challenge will be tough sledding until you level up a couple of times and get those skills over the 50 mark. It pays to concentrate on one or two skills at a time until you’re satisified they’re high enough. You’re not going to be able to master all of your skills, so choose where to put your skill points carefully and with your play style in mind.

        — Steve will say that skill tests get crazily successful once your character gets to level 15, and characters can become demigod-like at 20.

PS: Keep an eye out for Perks that boost skills or stats; those really help you boost the odds.

        • PPS: I see below you chose a female character with dubious morals; given your conservative play style and your focus on influencing characters, you may want to take the Black Widow perk when it comes available. You get extra dialog options reflecting her “vamping” her way through the conversation, boosting your odds, and you’ll also get a combat bonus against male NPCs.

          — Steve built a Vault chaplain, himself. Ah, that persistant paladin self-image…

  6. Merry Early Christmas to you both!

  7. If you decide to get Halo, Bryan would probably love another person to play with.

  8. Aside from Rock Band which I’m sure you already like, I would recommend Fable II. It’s great fun. I’m currently a good girl but I plan on playing it again and being evil. muahahahahah

  9. Yes, now Fallout 3 can suck out your soul for at least a month as well. Let me know how the cadaverous emptiness feels to you once you’ve gotten into the 1st week or so.

The game is pretty superb overall. They did a good job remaining true to the 1st 2 in the series in terms of atmosphere and storyline. Enjoy!

    • *chuckle* Nice. I’m playing a chick who says all the right things but is more or less without ruth. The supermarket was my first real experience, and let me tell you – my method of play for these types of games is known as incredibly conservative. It’s probably a good thing lucy isn’t here to watch, or she’d say, “Shoot the damned guy already!”

      • Ha! Well, in that case, I’ll amend my comment and extend the estimate of your soul sucking out to the 4 month range. See you in the spring! ;)

  10. Lovely plumage…

    err, I mean jewelry. ;-)

I nailed what is apparently one of the most difficult of Fallout 3 achievements–hitting Level 20 as a neutral character. Of course, I’m really only just starting to get in to the nitty-gritty of the main quest (which really, really pushes you toward the good side of things). Is much fun, especially as I’m a “nice to the ladies and the freaks, spit on my fellow males” character who has 5 skills maxed, and 5 more above 50… my build is kind of insane, though.

    • Re: Lovely plumage…

      Fun!

I started out with just a little bit in everything, which wasn’t the wisest move, but hey, can’t go back now.

  11. I bet that looks great with her eyes. (the necklace, not the other thing)
