What is the secret to the Chili Cheese Burrito?

I can make a chili burrito with cheese, mind you – I’ve done so, and they can be fairly delicious. But I can not, as yet, perfect the Taco Bell expatriate, the Chilito. Addictive, tasty and utterly portable (so long’s you don’t mind the possibility of magma cooling on your tie), they’ve ceased to exist anywhere even remotely close.

I’ve considered asking a distant friend to freeze a case and send to me for Burrito Emergencies, but it isn’t quite the same.

I just need to figure out the proper proportion of spices …

  1. Take heart; reportedly, one Taco Bell in Ann Arbor still has them:

    • I’ve found that the chilicheese.org locator is years out of date – it suggested various places in Livonia, which I investigated, and they hadn’t had them for quite some time.

Until recently, Lansing had them, which is not at all close, but worth it occasionally. Not anymore.

    • I can say for certain that the chilicheese locator lies in this case. :P

  2. Hmm. The Taco Bell chili mix has always tasted remarkably like Hormel no-beans canned chili to me, even though it’s mixed in the store from their regular taco meat plus a packeted mix. Have you tried Hormel as a base?

  3. I was so pissed when they got rid of these from the menu. Same with Volcano tacos.

If you ever perfect the recipe for the CCB please let me know!

  4. I mind the possibility of magma cooling on my tie!!!

You’ll note the huge amounts of Sodium and calories from fat for the small amount of food. It is MUCH MUCH more than one would put in their own food when cooking at home.

And this article lays out pretty neatly why you just can’t get your home-made burritos to be like the taco bell ones.

  6. Most clones recipes online use Wolf Brand Chili which I’ve never seen in stores around here.

  7. I was driving through my local taco bell to get my 7-layer burrito and by pure chance the car in front of me ordered a chili cheese burrito. My ears perked up and I remembered this post and thought… oh! I must get one of those instead!

    and so I did.

and so I am eating it.

and so I am replying to let you know…

    it is good.

    mmmm.
