Honeymoonery

Lucy and I have finally decided on our Honeymoon.

We’re going to San Francisco – we’re leaving the Friday after our wedding, and returning on Saturday.

A family friend has given us a week’s stay at a condo in downtown San Francisco. And when I say downtown, I mean in the Nob Hill area, near Fisherman’s Wharf. Which, I guess, is sweet.

We’ve just started planning things – we got our plane tickets, and we’re starting to figure out what there is to do during that week. Along with spending loads of time with my one and only wife, we’ll get a chance to hang out with our San Francisco clan (which is becoming rather large, actually)!

It’s really exciting, actually! Any advice for neat things for two geeks to do in SF? I think we have to hit up the burrito place Joy, Jeska and Jeff took me to the last time I was there.

Meanwhile, we’re also planning for the wedding, planning for her graduation, and in the process of probably putting our foot in the householding ring. Seriously, we’re looking at a house, only a few miles from where I live now. No, I’m not kidding you. All while she changes jobs and uproots her Lansing life to join me halfway between Ann Arbor and Detroit.

We’re already planning a work party/BBQ for the weekend before the wedding – it was going to be a second wedding shower for local folk, but frankly, we’re already getting a lot of loot and we don’t like the feeling of obligation, so I will be asking some folks to oblige us with bringing their hands and stomachs, and we’ll get some crap done. :)

Also sorta kinda working on the Bachelor party which is complicated because A) I think strippers are boring, B) I’m not a gambler or a heavy drinker, C) my entire side of the wedding party are women who are also going to the Bachelorette party, and D) I’ve got to figure this thing out while planning a wedding, moving on buying a house, doing Track head work for Penguicon, and a sharp increase of workload at the jobbery.

In fact, this is the look of me pretending not to be a bit overwhelmed and undersleeping. If I completely flake out on something I’m supposed to do in the next few months, I would appreciate a swat on the ass and a gentle pointing in the right direction, because you’re already going to see enough of my blubbering on the wedding day. (I’m such a sap)

Unrelatedly, this is your Boy And His Dog “awwww” moment.

  1. The best bachelor/ette parties I’ve been to have been essentially the same party with one room the designated “bachlorette” zone and another the designated “bachelor” zone and plenty of mutual friends wandering around. With some mooning in lieu of stripping. Or friends doing the stripping like at Karinny’s bachelorette.

    • We did a co-ed party because we also had mixed-gender wedding parties, and most of my friends are male and most of my husband’s friends are female. It was mostly a “we’re not going to sleep the night before the wedding anyway, come party with us!” kinda thing.

  2. Exploratorium! Exploratorium! Exploratorium!

At least, that’s where I’m going again when I return to SF. And I would totally go there as a honeymoon activity, because we’re just that sort of geek.

  3. First of all, a late congratulations on the getting married part. :)

Second of all, because I am pita, after all, I have to point out that Nob Hill is not really near Fisherman’s Wharf, unless by “near” you mean about a mile and a half, which isn’t far, exceptin’ you must take the hills into account, which changes the idea of that distance that might be in many people’s head. :)

I give a second vote for Exploratorium. If you like Disney, there is The Walt Disney Family Museum (haven’t been to, but heard good things about). The California Academy of Sciences is a good natural history museum (newly redone too–I am finally going there tomorrow).

If you can get down to San Jose (an hour’s drive south), there is The Tech Museum, which I have not been to either, but I have also heard good things about. Also, a little closer, but still not in the city (just north in Sausalito) is the Bay Model, which I have been to and think is kinda awesome.

I know a fantastic karaoke bar and a very cool speakeasy. If you have any time, I’d like to see you (perhaps we can get some local ARGers together). When is the honeymoon?
