So here I am: Vegas

•February 2, 2007 • 20 Comments

The flights were fairly uneventful, except there was a birthday girl in the 3.5 hr flight, and as her party drank, they became more and more obnoxious. I found myself relieved I’d brought my earplug-like headphones.

While waiting in line, I learned some new things. The guy next to me in line works on the software for the largest slot machine producer in the world, and while I was talking about some of the hotels I had to visit this week, I mentioned Green Valley Ranch. He said that was really designed for the locals (rather than tourists), and that the slots pay better there. Huh!

I’m in a bind. I put myself here by putting it off to the last minute.

I need a ride to the airport. Tomorrow.

I’d probably want to get there by 2:30 at the latest (3:50 flight), but earlier would be okay.

The two options are picking me up from home in Plymouth or picking me up from Karin’s place in Romulus (whichever’s easier on you).

Much love,

Perception philosophy

•January 31, 2007 • 44 Comments

The vagaries of perception are nothing short of awe-inspiring.

First, you have the moot question I’ll call “symbol unity”. Our eyes function differently – some people are a little color-blind in very peculiar ways, and yet we are trained to associate a uniform description to a particular color. If I were to see what you see, I might call it “mud” instead of “red”, but because someone pointed to Color X when we were young and said “Red!”, we both call it that. Different perception, same name… That we do not see the same thing is purely academic.

Then you’ve got the minor or major conceptual differences we’ve built up over our entire lives. I see a fire truck go down the street, and maybe I remember the time when they came to my elementary school, and they let me play on it, and I feel good, trusting feelings, while you remember that your puppy died in a fire, the firemen broke down your door and scared you, and that your home was ruined by the water. Same truck, same street, but wildly divergent reactions.

Gaffer’s Bounce Lamp

This lamp was built by the gaffer for from Spiderman 2. Frankly, I’d be more impressed if it were the cinematographer or D.P., but it’s stll neat.

I’m not going to Geneva.

But chances are good I may go to Frankfurt.

And Tokyo.

Some days, I love being me.

I’m pleased that I accomplished this, entirely in one day, from scratch. A nice, dynamic, flexible “front end” for our video at work, populated by our article tool. It was pretty boring initially, but the sales folk wanted something unique that only had one ad position.

This is good for my job, too.

Faces of Meth

•January 29, 2007 • 40 Comments

I’ve gotten into a few discussions over my life with a couple of people who just didn’t agree with me that crystal meth was both heinously addictive and really, really nasty to your body.

Thusly, I present: Face of Meth. Before/after headshots.

NOTE: Safe for work, they’re all police photos, not grisly as such… but scary, yeah.

Normally I’m not shy at all about my information. I -do-, however, find it creepy that someone googled my phone number. I know, because it apparently came up with the Axon web site.

January parties – Karinny and Scott!

Karinny’s housewarming party

Karinny’s place was a fabulous time! I met all sorts of new folk, and partook in a hilarious game of Apples to Apples. She’s ultra-close to my place, but I might have to bribe her to come to my place, because (alas) even being in the car with her after she’s had quality cat time has me tearing up. I didn’t know she had a cat (I’m sure I was told at some point, but I forget all sorts of things), so I was happy I had my inhaler with me.

HOWEVER, this (coupled with going to my mom’s for dinner tonight, with lucy) inspired me to refill my Singulair prescription. While it’s fairly expensive for the number of pills you get, it’s really the only thing that has actively mitigated my cat-induced asthma. Yay for modern medicine!

Karinny was sweet enough to invite T-Rex to my birthday party as well, which was just awesome, as ever.

I spent the early part of the afternoon with folks at Pizza House, which is pretty much my favorite pizza of all time. Yes yes, I know you chicago and new york folk may be offended, but I’ve had what you have to offer, and PH’s deep dish pizza has a certain full-bodied flavor that’s been missing in my pizzas. Particularly authentic chicago style – the last time I had it, I thought someone forgot to spice the sauce entirely!

I digress.

We all came back to my place, gathered some more people, and just had a wild time with, y’know, cheese and stuff. Seriously, I was going to break out the games, but we just never got around to it. I love that, when everyone’s laughing and chatting and having too good of a time to break out distracting things. What the hell is an aluminum falcon??”

We had to leave a few people behind before heading to Leo’s, but each of them had made some sacrifices to see me on my birthday. Nancy and Keira drove all the way up from Lansing to see Dawn Treader Madras Masala ME and my kinfolk, and the hung out with us for many hours longer than I thought they would. Chuck and Rennie came and spent time with us, even though they’re trying not to travel far right now, and Chuck and I played a few more games on his excellent page in my Big Black Book. Cheryl was definitely not feeling well (nothing catching), and yet she came over and chatted with us all, even though we were shouting and pounding on things.

My 29th Birthday Party

Once we arrived at Leopold Bros, lots of other fun people crawled out of the woodwork. Scott and Sam were on their way to see Electric Six, but spent a few hours with us in the meantime. Scott even drew in my book, which is the best birthday present. K.T. and Jen and Joe stuck it out to the end, and were hardcore fluxx players. Scott and Rowen came with their friend, and we sort of traded envoys to each other’s games once in awhile as they played “Duel” while we did A2A. Anne, of course, made an appearance, and bought me what looks to be a really useful leather jumprope. Besides the potential ‘ancillary uses’, I hope to take it to the basement and jump where my downstairs neighbor won’t flip out.

Seriously, another awesomely successful, fun, exciting birthday full of laughter, hugs, and boobs on my head. Who could ask for anything better?

Thanks. I love yous.
