Vegas, baby!

•January 26, 2007 • 10 Comments

In other news, how many times in my life am I going to have to say “I’m not using big words to impress you. In fact, I know they won’t impress you. That’s. Just. How. I. Talk.”

EDIT: For those of you who don’t know, when you’re walking around the strip in Vegas, hundreds of men, women, and (yes) children hand you these color flyers for women of ill repute. It’s hilarious!

The last time I was in Vegas, I send Skippy some schoolgirl-lookin’ flyers. I want to send out more of the same. So if you’d like something fun in the mail from Vegas, give me your address (I promise not to sign you up for any magazines) and I’ll send you the love.

Heather is teh awesomest.

•January 25, 2007 • 8 Comments

Heather’s my ‘older sister’. She doesn’t mine being called that because she looks like she’s about 21. She and I started chatting it up on the BBSes around… 15 years ago. She gave me girl advice and helped me escape the house when things got hairy.

We’ve consoled each other through crappy significant others, we’ve been to each other’s major events, and even though we have never lived particularly close to each other, we always find a little time in our hyper-busy lives to hang out and talk. It’s one of those “time doesn’t change” friendships, and I’m seriously hoping the same can be said for distance.

She’s moving away in a few months, all the way to sunny FL. Continue reading ‘Heather is teh awesomest.’

Sale hacking

•January 24, 2007 • 8 Comments

The Consumerist has a tip about price codes at various retail stores regarding their deals. If you check the price for a given product, it will vary based on where it is in its “sale cycle”.

“The popularity of yesterday’s “Target Price Drop Hack” post helped rustle out some other retailer’s secret pricing codes:

Sears: 99: regular 98: No coupons or sales 88: closeout 97: clearance/discontinued 93: refurb/open-box

CircuitCity: 98: local price match 97: open box item 96: limited stock item, either oop (out of production) or so new that supplies are not regular yet 95: clearance oop product

OfficeDepot: Prices not ending in 0,9 or 5 are final markdowns.

Target: 9: full price 8: clearance 4: final markdown

RadioShack, Gap, many retailers: 7: final markdown”

Things to do Saturday

•January 24, 2007 • 57 Comments

We have votes for playing games and conversation at my place, with perhaps a Pizza House lunch or late lunch, and then Leopold Bros silliness as we near evening.

What say you?

PS I don’t want to hear anyone say they weren’t sure if they were invited! These people are absolutely invited:

Shaving my head is something of a surreal experience.

I’m usually pretty far along in the hair-growing thing when I shave – so far along that my hair starts to feel like hair again, instead of fuzz.

When my hair is newly-shaved, it is an opting for efficiency and pragmatism over what would otherwise be a pointless attempt at making hair that was one lustrous and thick look good in its own version of middle age. I spend my time, instead, on carefully trimming up my beard – even sides, hand-cut graduation, kissable mustache, all of it.

Perhaps I’ve simply relocated my “fashion hair”. :D

Anyway, the point is that after I shave my head I feel more efficient and pragmatic. I hadn’t even left the house this morning before doing three things I’d intended to do for a week, and it seems to have lasted through the day thus far.

Anyone else have a ritual that affects their behavior like this?

Mmm covetous fidelity!

“Make your MP3 music sound better than your CDs – Hear it all – crisp cymbal crashes, wailing guitar solos and deep, rumbling bass, thanks to the Xmod. It intelligently enhances the highs and lows, restoring detail and vibrance to your audio.

“Stunning surround sound from your stereo speakers – Now, you can enjoy virtual surround sound through your stereo speakers with the Creative Xmod. Expand your stereo MP3 music and digital movies. Voices are centered in front of you. Ambient sound appears all around you… just like a live performance.

“A headphone experience that’s more immersive than ever – Hear the difference even with headphones. X-Fi CMSS-3D expands music from your headphones outwards, so that it sounds like you’re surrounded by multiple virtual speakers. You’ll feel like you’re sitting in with your favorite band, or that you’ve been dropped into the best seat in the movie theater.”

Saturday’s coming up fast!

So, I’m nearly 29. The die has been cast – we’re going to Leopold Bros!

But before that, I’d like to do something fun during the day on Saturday. Any suggestions will be entertained! :)

ConFusion 2007

ConFusion 2007

It was a great, interesting, weird, and different year. I didn’t spend as much time randomly exploring, nor did I spend as much time (or, indeed, any time) at the panels. Instead, I explored with my stalwart gang, and we ate, drank, and sang merrily on occasion.

I danced, for sure, but I didn’t dress up for the contest. Lucy and I were going to do the “School-girl and Hentai tentacle monster” thing, but it just wasn’t our year for it – my fishnets weren’t available. Nancy, on the other hand, totally won the prize for best “hall costume” (IE discovered instead of entered). We all cheered for her boobs very accurate and fun costume.

We played some wacky fun games, and cruised the various parties, and had some fascinating scotch (kind of smoky and peppery), as well as Mount Gay *ahem* vanilla rum with coke and other merry drinks. Thanks be to the pirates who contributed to our rum rations! I belted out “Drunken Sailor”, and got the whole hall (for it were a mobile pirate party!) singing, and that was pretty awesome.

I met up with Chuck, Rennie, Dean and M’jit, Ann, Rikhei, Brendan, and metric tonnes of other folk. I did not get my yearly Sydney sighting, but perhaps I’ll spy her at PenguiCon. :)

I think, because I was with my own group, I did not do as much meeting-of-new-people this year, and that’s a shame. Also, I didn’t lurk in the Con Suite (always a great place for conversation), but I think part of that was because I had a knack for appearing there just as all the food had gone (must have followed the rum!). Bad timing on my part!

I was glad to see a large quantity of younger kids this year – ConFusion has (IMO) been threatening to make itself irrelevant through a lack of youth, but I think if these folk keep the tradition going, we’ll see the event continue to flourish.

Finally, I’m pleased to note that the art room has made a comeback! I bought lucy a beautiful pendant (which she’s wearing in the photos) from the room (organized by Dean, I believe). I hope it grows back to its former glory.
