Songs I might sing on Thursday

•May 12, 2009 • 19 Comments

(This is so I won’t forget)

She Blinded Me (with science!) – Thomas Dolby
Living on a Prayer – Bon Jovi (maybe not, he does go pretty high)
Island in the Sun – Weezer
Edwyn Collins – A Girl Like You (I never see it, but maybe!)
The Toadies – Possum Kingdom
Duran Duran (the possibilities are endless here)
Depeche Mode (same)
End of the World (as we know it) – They Might Be Giants
Need You Tonight – INXS
Great Big Sea (hah! right)
Get Over It – OK Go
Black Sabbath – War Pigs (I don’t think I’m brave enough to belt this one out in “public”)

See what you’d be missing? It’ll be priceless!

I probably won’t want to go home beforehand on Thursday, so maybe there’ll be a dinner engagement for those who are available earlier.

It’s a brand new day, and the sun is high

Meet Remulos.

I’m not going to tell you why I chose that name ’cause it’s super-geeky – you’ll have to google it.

Anyway, there were surprisingly few catches to the build process. It took me approximately 2 days, and that was basically because I couldn’t buy a part at 10pm (boo). BEST BUY, WHY DO YOU FAIL ME?

  • The power supply did not arrive with the case as expected. NewEgg offered to compensate me if I bought another power supply through them. I told them I wanted to get one right away and politely suggested they compensate me anyway, as a courtesy … and they did!
  • The power supply I DID acquire was slightly less powerful than the original, but I haven’t had any trouble yet. That said, it came with two SATA power plugs, so I had to buy a splitter – I have a DVD drive and two HDs (RAID 0 means the PC writes to both of them at once, for speed).
  • Windows 7 is my OS for now. Can I tell you how much of a pain it is to get it to recognize hard drives that were RAIDed together? I thought I was prepared with drivers on a USB, but I had to pull out the Motherboard CD.

… that’s it! That’s all it took.

The installation of Windows 7 was a snap after that, the system works perfectly so far. I haven’t overclocked it yet, I figure I’ll wait on that.

I’ve installed a number of Open Source/Freeware softwares – many of them work with Linux, which gives me high hopes of installing Ubuntu Linux as well, and using the same software packages between them.

I moved Warcraft (the other heavy hitter program, behind Premiere CS4, which I still need to re-locate) onto the local drives and quickly set it up. I’m running approximately 1460 x 1000 in-game with the settings maxed, and I drop down to maybe 30fps during 25-man raids. That is pretty effin’ slick, right there.

UNRELATED TO COMPUTER TALK (for those of you who glazed over):

You should go watch President Obama at the White House Correspondents Dinner. That man is funny, with great delivery.

If that link doesn’t work for you, you can find it on youtube, but the videography sucks. JSYK.

(PS it’s time to change my geek icon. Athena, you were great, but your time has passed. I still love you, I promise.)

You know someone’s probably unhealthy when …

… the bathroom smells exactly like the muck you pull up when weeding a lake.

I’m just sayin’ …

Many thanks to pure_doxyk for posting it – I knew where it was going from the beginning, and I loved it nonetheless.

What you say, What you do, and Who you are

•April 27, 2009 • 7 Comments

(stolen entirely from the author of Tribes and All Marketers are Liars)

We no longer care what you say.

We care a great deal about what you do.

If you charge for hand raking but use a leaf blower when the client isn’t home
If you sneak into an exercise class because you were on the wait list and it isn’t fair cause you never get a bike
If you snicker behind the boss’s back
If you don’t pay attention in meetings
If you argue with a customer instead of delighting them
If you copy work and pass it off as your own
If you shade the truth a little
If you lobby to preserve the unsustainable status quo
If you network to get, not to give
If you do as little as you can get away with

…then we already know who you are.

No one says anything because it isn’t worth their time. Someone else will get the promotion or receive the favor, simple as that.

For me personally, few things are more frustrating than bitching when there’s work to be done. I love to crab-ass on my own time, believe me, but don’t make my project even more of a hassle by complaining.

Let’s talk about fairness and control for a minute.
