That jerk Scalzi kept me up until 4:30 am, Saturday. I thought he was going to pull a Whedon in the last chapter of Old Man’s war.

———-
Some of my favorite games that bit my exploration bug, in no order:

Super Metroid
Blaster Master
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Phantasy Star
World of Warcraft
Fallout 3
Castle Crashers (seriously! I had to know where it went next)
The Secret of Evermore
Loom
———-
Speaking of games, one of the games we played with Lucy’s family was Pit – the trading card-game. Lotsa shouting for numbers. Very funny. I declared myself the most obnoxious player because I wouldn’t just hold the number of cards up I wanted to trade, I would slide them into the other player’s lap, where they pretty much had to take them. :D

Morning!

Easter breakfast was tasty – huge cinnamon rolls and sausages.

We made our road trip to cleveland without my computer, which means I started reading, which is always trouble. I started and nearly finished Old Man’s war late last night.

There’s this weird feeling of anxiety that comes when you realize there are multiple gaps in your favorite bookshelf because you’ve loaned out some books and don’t recall who you gave them too (not including earthenwood‘s book borrowing last night).

Mostly, I think it’s not remembering precisely what was there, and wondering if you’ll ever see it again.

I think it’s actually pretty rare that I get books or DVDs back when I loan them out. Perhaps because I don’t keep track.

What would be a convenient way of doing that? Maybe keep a little notepad next to the shelf?

Check out this video – doesn’t this remind you of Y.T.’s board in Snow Crash? All that guy needs is a magnetic ‘poon in his other hand, yeah?

When you hear about something like this (alternative “goop” found for 3d-printers that gosts $1/lb instead of $50/lb, making printing 3d objects very, very cheap), do the possibilities excite you?

If I linked to an article about building a molecular biology lab for less than $1,000, would it interest you (exciting or scary)?

’cause right now, I look through my IM list, and there’s maybe two, perhaps three people who I think would even raise an eyebrow to this stuff, which leaves me with pent up wannatalkaboutit!

I’m not sad or anything, I just know most of my friends could care less, and I don’t want to pepper your IMs with cool-to-me links if you’re not into it. :D

If you are, let me know!

What is American Culture? Where does it come from, how is it created, and what is our role in it?

•April 9, 2009 • 3 Comments

I left a few comments in pure_doxyk‘s post that led her to say: “Also, you should talk more — somewhere, somehow — about how exactly fiction, journalism and advertising are representative of our culture…I’m going to have to chew on it a bit, but it’s a darn interesting claim.” So.

After chewing on this a minute (IE, without deep research), I think that our culture (OUR culture) is largely represented by an intersection of our history, fiction, journalism and our advertising.

Let us take as an example our well-advertised believe in The American Dream.

Meaty thoughts for people who love to digest!

This is awesome!

Icon glee!

•April 7, 2009 • 28 Comments

1. Reply to this post, and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

(I don’t know why I chose to write “Made by atdt1991” on a quarter of my icons – I made all of them. Maybe because I didn’t want it to look like I made the graphics on some of them.)

Default
Keywords: engaged
So, I think you all know that I proposed to Lucy during SkennCon 2009, on the train. This was a shot I asked for while we were at the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago. Which seems like an appropriate place for us to celebrate. ;)
Keywords: don’t touch
The internets being what they are (and being the fuzzy bear that I am), I needed a quick-and-dirty icon that said “Don’t fucking press me, I’m a fucking delicate flower, okay?” … you know, without the word fucking. It’s extremely rare that I pull this one out – in fact, it may be years, at this point.
Keywords: rikki bunny dance
:D I love this icon. Rikki made this adorable phone-cam video back in the D-A-Y, and she asked if someone could make an icon out of it. I’ve only ever used it when replying to her (it doesn’t feel right otherwise), but I can’t get rid of it ’cause it’s too damned cute.
Keywords: rollins
I am a huge fan of Henry Rollins’ spoken word (and a middlin’ fan of his music). I created a 3-dimensional portrait of him in an art class with foamcore and spraypaint, and (years later) decided it needed to be an icon. I use it interchangeably with my “get it done” icon to demonstrate a sense of motivation and drive.
Keywords: nano
I love following the trends of technology. I thought this graphic represented the wonder and fear of nanotechnology – microscopic and submicroscopic machines that could live in our bloodstream and change our lives forever. Maybe. One day. Depending on the sort of technology, I prepend my “Ain’t this cool?!” posts with this or my Robots icon.

Alright, peoples, your turn!

Reader Finds Card Skimmer On Bank ATM

http://consumerist.com/5200818/reader-finds-card-skimmer-on-bank-atm

I find stuff like this totally fascinating. On the one hand, it’s totally ingenius – mold a front cover for a given ATM brand (how do you think they do it? manually, or with a fast-setting mold product?), set in a tiny magnetic strip reader of your own that attaches to a battery, a flash card and a USB plug, and adhere it to an ATM. Step 3, profit!

On the other hand, what sort of mentality do you have to have to premeditate such an act? Do they do it to their local ATM, for quick access, or do they drive far away so they don’t affect their friends and family (if any)?

I really want to know what they’re thinking. Is it just the lure of fast money? Do they dislike other people, and glory in the idea of screwing them over? Or do they just think, “I deserve this, for all I’ve been through!”?

Honestly, I think it’s that last bit more than anything else. Any time I start thinking that I deserve something, especially if it’s “I deserve it more than someone else”, I hear warning sirens in my head – I’m probably about to justify something I would not otherwise find ethical or wise. Know what I mean?

Chillin’

•April 6, 2009 • 2 Comments

So, winter has struck back, and there was no way I was leaving lansing at 6 am to make it to work by 8:30 (judging by Lucy’s trip, it would have taken even longer)… so I’m chilling in her apartment while she does worky stuff. I immediately made the most efficient use of my time by sleeping in to 10 or so. Ahhh yeah.
