(yes, bored)
EDIT: LOLCAT IS DOWN! I REPEAT, LOLCAT IS DOWN!
(it’s here, but icanhascheezburger seems to have lost its pretties. “Hey! I was watchin’ that!”)
Woohoo!
•June 23, 2008 • 7 CommentsLucy’s sister was leaving this morning – I totally used it as an excuse to work from home.
I am, though, still working, boo. *s* It was a great weekend, full of crazy fun experiences – Jer and I teamed up to form “Your Mom(ma)” at MedKat’s birthday Field Day Experiencestravaganza, wherein we approached every obstacle with style and grace, and good sportsmanship.
Of course, Brenna and Bridgit nearly wiped the floor with us (Brenna’s 4, Brigit is 8). They’d race ahead of us, with their amazing powers of childhood (aka, I’m too cute to be blasted off the field), when some other chumps would actually try to win it! Can you believe the nerve?
We couldn’t let that happen, though – our masculine egos could not accept losing, people might question our turgid maleness, and then our fashion sense, and it would be all downhill from there. So, we leaped forward like conjoined Donkey Kong twins to take the spotlight as “Team Most Likely to Wear Their Outfits After Labor Day”.
I love watching the video – we deliberately threw events in order to pummel Jessi and Sherli. We conspired during the balloon toss – I convinced the refs to start the balloon on my side so I could toss it to Jer and he could lob it straight at Jessi. SUCCESS!
They totally got us back during the three-legged race. We were on our second heat, sure to gain the lead, and you can see them plotting less than six inches behind us as the race begins, and when we turn around, in the lead, WHAM! jerks!
Anyway, Medkat’s party was awesome.
Sunday, a bunch of us had indian food, played rock band, and pretty much had a low-key veg out talk day, and then Jer, Ger, Lucy, her sister Libby and I played putt putt and had Wendy’s desserts.
The End!

Yes, George Carlin Died
•June 23, 2008 • 9 CommentsI prefer to think he died in a manner similar to Vizzini:
“… never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha! … [thump]”

•June 20, 2008 • 11 CommentsFriday discussion
Your home is on fire. All of your important papers and documents are locked in a fireproof safe and you’re 100% sure they’ll survive. You have time to grab just one sentimental item on the way out. What is it?
That’s incredibly easy. :) My gearbook. The big leatherbound thing, inspired by a discussion with revelation8 long ago, that has drawings, letters and memories from perhaps a hundred people.
Heck, with most of my photos from the last four to six years online, and most of my childhood photos at mom’s, I’d miss little of that.
I guess what I’d miss most are my b/w art photos, almost none of which are scanned.
If I had a second option for “sentimental grab”, it would be my external hard drive. old letters, old reports, old chats … there is some serious history there.
What about you?
(thanks thunderclap!)

•June 20, 2008 • 7 CommentsShe’s on the phone with someone else in this office, discussing their crush on the other admin in our department, Dan. She’s cooing and clucking and talking about his personal life. Thank goodness he’s gone for the day.
Ew!
Neat!
•June 20, 2008 • 13 CommentsI realize it’s dorky to care, but when has that stopped me?
Did you know that asphalt is an insulator and concrete is (technically) a conductor? Also, that glass becomes a conductor at very high heat? I knew about the superconductivity of some metals at extremely low temperatures, but I wasn’t aware that insulators worked in the opposite way.
Err… hi! How’s your day?
EDIT: Also, did you know that 1 horsepower is equal to approx .74 kilowatts, and that europeans generally refer to their engine power in kW?
From the article “Can a video game teach evolution?”
•June 19, 2008 • 3 CommentsEDIT: I’ll just link to the post I made in the PenguiCon LJ about the article and one of our guests of honor, Dr. Jane McGonigal of I Love Bees fame.
Those of you who are looking for a BRIEF summary of what the game was all about should read the latter part of that post. :)
CSL update
•June 19, 2008 • 13 CommentsCSL is totally going hardcore on a new girl in the office, insisting loudly that she needs to go to her church “with people running up and down the aisles and everything”, handing out a pamphlet for her church, and insisting that the new girl needs to pay her tithes every week, even if she thinks she can’t afford it. Hey, we get through this world by persuasion, I get that, but she’s less than six feet from me.
I have to admit that it’s starting to bother me; when she goes on like this, too loud to ignore, I just don’t know what to do, professionally speaking. I feel like if I say something, she’s going to know it’s me – I’m the dude who doesn’t say “bless you” when she sneezes, y’know?
I feel like a line has been crossed. This is different from her talking about her divorce and her children’s problems with the state and all of that awkward ultra-personal info.
Speaking of… In case you’re curious, CSL is somehow and suddenly engaged to be married, in three weeks, to her pastor’s nephew.
Yeah, I don’t know, either.
… I think part of what makes me so hesitant to act is that I don’t want to be a part of making an overly restrictive work environment. I feel lucky that I don’t have to wear a tie, that my boss let’s me screw around a bit as long as I get my work done, and that no one cares if I answer my cell phone at my desk.
But, y’know, if it’s a long conversation, I leave my desk. It seems reasonable, doesn’t it?
So she’s talking to her S.O. on the phone, presumably about who knows, and she’s naming people, and she says “… and SCOTT, who has to listen to me on the phone, *giggle* … oh, I’m just teasing Scott who sits next to me, but he gets into a zone …” Clearly my “I’m not listening to you” vibe is working, but maybe that is working against me, here. I mean, if I seem like I’m totally ignoring anything personal she’s saying, maybe that makes her feel like she’s free to say anything, I don’t know.
