Me: if anyone asks what we were talking about, say it was tapeworm. “Jigs and threshers” would totally blow my cover.
J: Taenia or Diphyllidium?
Me: Diphyllidium, clearly. I prefer things with two phylli.
J: Hmm. I think those are the ones with bilateral genitalia
J: can’t remember tho
Me: Useful
J: allows for double-fisting
Me: No turning over in bed, I was thinking
Me: But also that.
J: those tapeworms are totally using the whole chicken!
Me: Srsly!
J: and then they write all about it on their blogs
J: so. freaking. annoying.
Best thing all day

•November 19, 2007 • 7 CommentsMe: ah, a natural keyboard, eh? Duuuude I’m so geeked, I finally have a backup hard drive plan. I’m going to wait until black friday in case there are any price updates, but a 320 gig Mybook (western digital), replete with USB and eSATA plugs, 7200 RPM, only 100 bucks.
Me: I seriously need a data backup, and with video, storing them on paltry DVDs just won’t cut it
Skipford: Neat :)
Me: Yeah, particularly the eSATA – I have a PC card that should make transferring extra fast. Well… it was inexpensive though, this would also help me troubleshoot a HD enclosure I bought that has behaved wonkily.
Me: good word, innit? wonkily.
Skipford: Indeed. :)
Skipford: I think I’m going to steal it.
Me: I am afraid my automated defenses would destroy you first.
Skipford: Whatever.
Me: And if they don’t get you, my pet Reggie would seriously mess you up.
Skipford: I AM NINJA
Me: Reggie will know you’re there. He’s unblindable, and not easily swayed!
Skipford: He loves cupcakes.
Me: I can see why you’d think that, but he prefers feces. Unless you plan on making feces cupcakes, and I think that’s a step far even for you, ninja baker.
Skipford: You say that as if I have not yet baked them already.
Me: They’d better be awfully small – otherwise they won’t fit in his pot.
Skipford: His pot?
Me: Right. It’s hard to keep oregano alive without a pot.
Skipford: Oregano
Skipford: You think that I will be easily defeated by Oregano
Me: Pretty much.
Skipford: Psht.
Me: He’s a good sentry. *pets Reggie*
Easy peasey.
•November 13, 2007 • 1 CommentI’ve almost come to cherish the frantic scrambling that precedes a business flight, and yet today, inexplicably… I have all the time in the world. I’ve got an hour before I have to leave, and yet all I have remaining is to pack, do dishes, water the plant, and get some cash.
It’s a good thing Lucy and I picked out a bigger pot for Reggie – that little one barely held any water. I think he’ll be just fine for the four days I’m gone.
It sounds like Kristen, Woody and I are going to meet tonight and hit up Little Tokyo, wherein I will sample what is known as “almost totally authentic Tokyo Raman”. With the rest of my free time (I’ll have to manufacture some), I’m hoping to visit The Edison, and on Thursday go to dinner with Michelle.
Okay, flying off to shoot movies of CEOs for the web is pretty cool, everything considered, but visiting friends is totally what makes this worthwhile.

Two years ago today, I was introduced to a girl by a friend of mine. I had no idea I’d be meeting someone so very cool – I probably would have shaved better. ;)
Lucy’s been my best friend, and she’s always found reserves of patience for me. Over the two years we’ve known each other, we’ve had countless deep, exploring conversations. We’ve changed each other in good ways.
I’m always excited to see her, and we talk every day. When we broke up, she gave me the space I needed to think, and yet was always there to talk when I needed it, and was constantly working on ways to help me with my goals – even when they were at odds with what she wanted from me.
When she tells me she cares about me as a person as much as me, her friend, I believe it. Because she proves it, all the time.
We laugh even on the difficult days. I think she’s adorable, and she thinks I’m hilarious. And many things have changed, in our relationship, in my head, since we separated. What didn’t change is that I want to spend my time with her, one way or another.
I told a few people that whether we were dating or not verged on semantics, and it’s true, so I decided to get rid of the incongruity. It doesn’t make sense to not enjoy what we have right -now- because on some later date we may or may not part ways. That’s not living.
I love you, gopher. Happy 2 years, with lots of head-chewing to come.

Cellphone Straitjacket Is Inspiring a Rebellion
Man, I do hope that is true. I really hope the capabilities for phones open up soon. While I am very excited with my current phone, and it accomplishes all I need it to, I still want to be able to upload my own custom ringtones without buying a cable, and I still want actual IM clients and not repurposed text-message-based software. I’m already paying extra for unlimited text messaging, can’t we dispense with this ‘cheaty’ method, Verizon?
Maybe I should just move to japan for the sole reason that they have kick-ass cellphones there. ;)
What I really want (on an ordinary phone) is to be able to convince all my friends to enable gps tracking and install one of the cool softwares available currently for pc-like phones that lets you post pictures to your friends from your current location that appear on a map, say what you’re doing there, etc.
It really geeks me out to think I could, say, go to Mongo’s in Royal Oak and have friends pop in who happened to be in the area and checked their map to see who was around.

My fine friend thunderclap8 says that Charlie Stross’ new book Halting State references I Love Bees shortly after a bank is robbed in a MMO game. I’m all over it.
Excuse me while I call home and turn on the lights …
•November 12, 2007 • 11 Commentsatdt: I think it’s interesting how readily we forget how much technology has changed our world in the last thirty years. I try to put myself in the mindset of when I had a big rack of cassette tapes, and think of what I would have thought about this tiny shuffle with many hours of songs there at the press of a button.
Lady Jvar: *grin* it’s so true
atdt: Or remembering what it was like when only swank businessmen had cellphones, and they were tethered to the car and brick-like, in weight and volume. Payphones were everywhere. Now payphones are dead because 80% of the U.S. population has a cellphone.
Lady Jvar: I still have the mount for my cellphone of 8 years ago in the Amigo.
atdt: I racked up phone bills of hundreds of dollars calling a girl less than 60 miles away, and now I can call california at any time of day (as long as it’s verizon) and talk as longa s I want.
Lady Jvar: Oh…and what about IP phones! With my Vonage, I don’t even have to worry if the call isn’t Verizon!
atdt: And T-mobile is coming out with a phone that hops from cell to wi-fi and back again.
atdt: It’s the subtle things that are surprising – big changes like artificial limbs that respond to nerve impulses are one thing, but the subtle ways our lives have changed without our notice are the most fascinating.
atdt: maybe I’ll post this conversation and see what people say. :)

I love making random meals based on whatever I can find.
I have some kaiser rolls and no bread, so I made a tuna sandwich with pepper and rosemary, cheese and pita chips for some crunch. Yum!
