A confession

A friend of mine gave me a great compliment the other day about how I don’t seem to be afraid to discuss anything, and since I’ve been struggling with something for years, I decided that I have to share it with you.

When I was 15, I was … impressionable. My first (and, as far as I knew, last) girlfriend held great sway with me. I let her talk me into things that I’d consider beyond the pale, these days. This, then, is the story of the most embarrassing of those circumstances.

I must confess that I really, really liked Warrant.

Katrina had me listening to Z-Rock, and for awhile I was fabulously in love with both her and my hair metal. I used a dual-deck to loop-record one track from Cherry Pie over and over, and then practiced singing it for days. Because, y’know, she liked my singing voice. Which should have been a clear warning that her tastes were less than objective or refined.

Anyway, I’m listening to Trase’s music collection through the network, and here it is again. Warrant. I’ve been harboring a deep, dark secret that I could no longer hide from you, my friends. I’m sure you’ll come to forgive me, in time. At least my favorite song wasn’t Duran Duran’s Wild Boys, right?

It’s been a pretty good few days. I’ve seen a Tiger’s game, Transformers, Ratatatouille, as well as various folks (Trase, Eli, Karin, Jeska), not including the gaggle of friends on the 4th. Lucy was with me for her only significant break in this whole summer camp season, which was pretty cool. I even got some swimming in, using my pool here for the first time.

Tonight, I’ll be visiting Leslie, Joy, Benny and Skippy at Pizza House; I’m geeked!

Meanwhile, I finally found some gumption to start work on a promo video for myself. I figured out the part that provides the most trouble, and has to be chosen before you place anything else: the music.

I’d like you to think about this image as you watch The Transformers.

*chuckle* I wasn’t the most amazing photographer when I first shot this, many years ago, but I knew a cool shot when I saw it.

(also, this is my MCS icon, heh, and that’s me, on one knee, looking out over the city like a … like a … fairly geeky budding photographer. :D

jphotog says this: “Oh my god, Ratatouille is so good. I nearly cried from trying to restrain my insane giggling during pretty much the entire movie.”

So, that’s a good sign. :)

I think blue_lucy and I are going to see Transformers tonight (before the spoilers get ridiculous), and Ratatouille some time in the next few days (maybe Saturday?).

Now don’t you wish you’d been there?

The celebration at netmouse‘s house was just great. I helped make the deviled eggs, which tided us over until the veggies and dip, which tided us over until the crackers and cheese, which kept us going until the cookies came out, which kept us pretty well stuffed until the ribs and corn were ready. Did I mention she cooked the ribs all night? They were awesome.

We watched many episodes of Firefly, skipping some of the unhappier ones as we went along. We even made it to the 4th disc before it was time to run outside and light off fireworks. We cheered at the best lines, and even applauded once.

The massage-fests were happening in every corner, with shirts in various states of disarray. Which is generally the best state for shirts to be in, IMHO.

The fireworks had the kaboom and the pow! As generally happens with fireworks that are (mostly) legal, we ended up tying the wicks together for some of the really small stuff, and setting off groups of sparklers placed in the ground. Funny enough, it was never these “homebrews” that caused me to fear for my life. ;) I did not have to fear for my car, because I did not drive.

I’m sure netmouse has plenty of pictures of the fireworks part of the evening … because I stole her camera and made it so. :) Hopefully, a few of them are worth posting.

And now, showered and freshly shorn, I’m off to work!

Firefly and (maybe) Fireworks!

Just a reminder to folks, if you’re interested in watching Firefly and then going to see fireworks nearby (if it isn’t rained out), check out netmouse‘s journal! You are invited!

It’s the west side of Ann Arbor – very easy to get to by either M-14 or I-94. Lovely basement, plenty of seating, big projector, free food… :)

I Will Not Take These Things For Granted” on Google Video
Google saved the day when YouTube was failing me, and now I shall reap the rewards!

I was talking in this post about thanking people who’ve let me lean on them and who lean on me, so I decided to make something. Tis fer you! … and me. :D

Anyway, this is sort of off-the-cuff, but if you like it, let me know. *muah*

EDIT: YouTube version is here for those of you unable to use google.

Whoa. Lucy got free tickets to the Tigers game tonight, so I guess I’m going to my first Comerica Park game.

So far, This seems to be the most convenient video encoder I’ve run across. Once you install it, you do have to go through and install the external apps (as with most freeware encoding applications), but it is incredibly easy to do – he provides buttons and checks to make sure they’re properly installed, very nice. It looks like it’s particularly useful for YouTubing things (midnightcoffee, your son might be interested – it’s freeware).
